Abstract: The
plant Spondias pinnata (Linn. f.) Kurz belonging to Anacardiaceae
family, is used as a medicinal agent in Bangladesh. In the present
investigation, attempt was undertaken to study the antibacterial potency and
cytotoxic activity of 80% ethanol extract of its fruit. The antibacterial
activity was performed by the disc diffusion method and cytotoxicity was
observed by brine shrimp lethality bioassay. The fruit extract exhibited mild
to potent antibacterial activity against some Gram-positive and Gram-negative
bacteria at a concentration of 500 µg/disc. Among
them Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus epidermidis shows promising result. The ethanolic extract revealed strong cytotoxicity having
LC50 of 2.12±0.09 µg/ml.

Authors: Arulanandam L, John Peter; Ghanthikumar, S
Abstract: A
protocol was established for mass propagation of the valuable medicinal plant Vitex trifolia Linn.(Verbenaceae)
through in vitro culture using leaf
and internodal explants. The highest percentage (88%) of callus induction from
internodal explants was observed on MS medium supplemented with 1.5mg/l 2, 4-D
and 0.3mg/l KIN and highest percentage (95%) of shoot induction from callus was
observed on MS medium supplemented with 2.0mg/l BAP and 0.3mg/l NAA. The in vitro raised shoots were successfully
rooted in MS medium augmented with 0.5 mg/l IBA. The plantlets were
subsequently hardened to green house conditions.
