Authors: Bhadja, Poonam; Kundu, Rahul
Abstract: Present study reports the spatial and temporal variations of the seawater
quality from five major shores along the South Saurashtra coastline (India). The
results suggested normal range of physical, chemical and biological
characteristics in the samples of Dwarka and Mangrol as these coasts are not
affected by any apparent anthropogenic effects of any kind. The results also
suggested considerable anthropogenic load to the coastal waters of three other
shores studied where moderate to high degree of industrial activities existed. Results
of the present study revealed that the spatio-temporal variations of water
quality parameters were considerably affected by anthropogenic impacts at
Veraval, moderately at Kodinar and somewhat lesser degree at Diu.

Abstract: The present study was undertaken to find out the potential of indigenously
isolated Bacillus spp. in controlling virulent luminous Vibrio harveyi
infection in shrimp in vitro and in vivo. Luminescent bacteria were isolated
from shrimp farms of east coast of India. It is biochemically and
genetically identified as Vibrio harveyi. Two isolates of Vibrio harveyi obtained from infected shrimps were used for pathogenicity
studies in juvenile shrimps and the LD50 values for the above isolates
ranged between 3.7 x 106 to 8.9 x 107 CFU/ml. Indigenously isolated and identified Bacillus
spp. exhibiting antagonism were used for controlling the Vibrio
infection both in vivo and in vitro. In vivo
antagonistic activity was studied with three selected Bacillus isolates.
The same had reduced the mortality of Penaeus monodon juveniles when
challenged with
V. harveyi with an RPS of 87.5 - 50%. This is without affecting
the multiplication of the pathogen in water. Present study found that
indigenously isolated antagonistic Bacillus sp. could be used as
effective biocontrol agents against pathogenic luminescent V. harveyi.

Abstract: Present study was performed to validate the potential of mangrove, Excoecaria agallocha leaves against
Aeromonas hydrophila isolated from infected marine ornamental
fish, Amphiprion sebae.
Infected ten fish samples were collected from the marine ornamental fish
hatchery and the bacteria was isolated and identified as Aeromonas hydrophila. Antibiotic resistance characterization was
performed with commercial antibiotics. In vitro antibacterial activity
of methanol and acetone extract of Excoecaria
agallocha and their minimum
inhibitory concentration (MIC) were assessed. Healthy Amphiprion sebae when challenged with the Aeromonas hydrophila,
resulted in the development of clinical signs, those observed in the hatchery. The methanol extract of Excoecaria
agallocha leaf was administrated
with live A. hydrophila, decreased the percentage of mortality in the
experimental groups. The
phytochemical screening of the extract showed
the presence of alkaloids, phytosterols, fixed oils and fats, tannins,
phenolic compounds, proteins, free amino acids, gums, mucilage, flavonoids and
lignin. The
results revealed that the Excoecaria
agallocha leaves have the
potential to control the Aeromonas
hydrophila diseases in marine ornamental fish, Amphiprion sebae.

Authors: Deshkar, Sonal; Lakhmapurkar, Jayendra; Gavali, Deepa
Abstract: Present study deals with the physico-chemical parameters in three main
estuaries of Gulf
of Khambhat (The Narmada,
Mahi and Sabarmati). Parameters like the Dissolved Oxygen, Biological oxygen
demand, Salinity, all major nutrients and Petroleum Hydrocarbons have been
studied in detail. Comparison between the three estuaries for the nutrient load
is discussed in detail. One-way ANOVA suggests the significant difference
between the three estuaries which are discussed in detail. The correlation
between various parameters is also discussed. It is concluded from the present
study that out of the three estuaries Sabarmati estuary is having high and Narmada estuary is least nutrient load.
