Authors: Balasubramanian, P
Abstract: The production of international quality yarn is somewhat an uphill task for most of the spinners of Indian textile industry. The yarn export of this industry — with an installed capacity of about 26.59 million spindles, which is nearly 17% of world’s installed ring spindles — accounts for only 4% of the total export market. This paper attempts to clear some of the myths entertained by the spinners and highlights the methodology to be adopted to produce international quality yarn.

Abstract: Two-for-one
twisters have gained wide acceptance in the international as well as in the
Indian markets. This paper describes the recent developments, including those exhibited
at ITMA-91, in TFO twisters and their relevance to Indian textile units. The developments
are mainly in the application areas, machine productivity, refinement in the functional
parts, automation and process control instrumentation, and environmental
compatibility of the machines. A cost comparison of twisting on low-cost completely
indigenous machine and high-cost but high productivity machine is also made.

Authors: Salhotra, K R
Abstract: The new spinning
technologies such as rotor, air jet and friction spinning have tremendous potential
for higher productivity. However, at present these technologies not only suffer
from the problem of imparting some undesirable properties to the fabric but also
have limited applicability due to the restricted choice of fibres and counts which
can be successfully spun on them. Ring-spinning system, though having lower productivity,
does not have these drawbacks. This system, therefore, with the incorporation of
some recent

improvements
is likely to occupy the centre stage for the next few years.

Authors: Subramaniam, V; Mohamed, A Peer
Abstract: The wrap spinning
has the advantage of using coarser fibres for finer yarns in addition to its superiority
in production and yarn quality. This paper discusses the structure and properties
of wrap spun yarns and identifies areas that need researchers’ attention to have
a better understanding of the applications of these

yarns.
