through the analysis of document copy requests received by Insdoc during

journals could satisfy a majority of document demand in chemistry and chemical

rank list of the British Library Document Supply Centre (BLDSC) and also with
that of the Science Citation Index (JCR 1984).</span>

& T indicators have been defined as conceptual tools based on information
mechanism facilitating information search and/or retrieval of appropriate key
elements; and derivation of past, future and current trends of S & T
evolution in both R&D and interfacial contexts. Presently available tools
are the abstracting and indexing services of traditional type and the citation
indexes. Merits and demerits of both types of tools as S & T indicators
have been examined. A new tool (ABSCINDEX) has been proposed incorporating
functions of both traditional abstracting and citation indexing services. It
has been claimed that such a new tool will be highly effective in meeting the
optimum demands of a competent S & T indicator on regional basis especially
in the context of third world environments.</span>
