Authors: Sheela, K G; Deepa, S N
Abstract: This paper presents a new approach to select
number of hidden neurons in neural network in renewable energy systems. The
random selection of number of hidden neurons might cause over fitting and under
fitting problems in neural networks. The proper selection of neurons in hidden
layer is important in the design of neural network model. To fix hidden
neurons, 91 various criteria are examined based on estimated mean squared
error. The convergence analysis is performed for the various proposed criteria.
To verify the effectiveness of the proposed model, simulations were conducted
on real time wind data. Results show that with minimum error the proposed
approach can be used in renewable energy systems.

Authors: Pandey, A; Rath, B; Dwivedi, A K
Abstract: The purpose of the study was to increase the
dissolution and bioavailability of BCS class II drug, paliperidone by
amorphization. The technique that was evaluated for preparing amorphous
paliperidone (PAL) was Hot Melt Extrusion (HME). In case of hot melt extrusion
process, copovidone was used essentially as a hydrophilic polymer with
plasticizers like PEG (6000 and 20000), stearic acid and cetosterayl alcohol.
Melt extrusion process was carried out by using different concentrations of
drug, polymer, and plasticizers. DSC studies showed that the crystalline nature
of PAL was significantly reduced on melt extrude. Incorporation of the
plasticizer resulted in faster drug release compared with extrudes without
plasticizer. Out of the plasticizers studied extrudes prepared with 25% PEG
6000 showed rapid release, wherein more than 75% of drug release was achieved
within 30 minutes. The pharmacokinetics of melt extruded composition (PAL with
25% PEG 6000) and pure PAL was evaluated following oral administration (0.8
mg/kg) in healthy female Sprague Dawley rats. The extent of the mean plasma
exposures of PAL was 14-fold higher in animals treated with extruded mixture of
PAL, compared to animals treated with PAL. Melt extruded of PAL with PEG,
especially PEG 6000, reduced drug crystallinity, increased the rate and extent
of dissolution, and improved bioavailability.

Authors: Kharangate-Lad, A; Bhosle, S
Abstract: Bioemulsifiers
have gained a lot of importance in biodegradation, bioremediation, medical,
pharmaceutical and food industries due to their non-toxicity. In the present
study bacteria producing bioemulsifier were isolated from mangroves and
saltpans on mineral salt medium (MSS) containing crude oil as sole carbon
source. Amongst the 19 isolates picked up to screen for bioemulsification
activity, 9 isolates showed potential bioemulsification activities which were
in the range of 2.0-45.5 % for pellets while 1.7-56.5% for supernatants. Two
isolates MS-3 and MS-18 that showed the highest Emulsification index with
supernatant were selected and identified based on biochemical characteristics
as <i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">Aeromonas</i> (MS-3) and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">Vibrio</i> (MS-18) species. The isolate MS-3
was selected for detailed studies. The bioemulsifier was isolated, purified and
characterised using TLC, FTIR and found to be glycolipid in nature. The
critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the present emulsifier was found to be
12 mg/ ml with xylene as the hydrocarbon.

Authors: Adaganti, S Y
Abstract: The fiber glass waste generated from composite Industries is difficult
to dispose as they are hazardous to environment and are even found to be
carcinogenic. Fiber glass recovered from the waste was collected and reused as
reinforcement. Three boards of baggase with varied composition of glass fibers
were prepared using urea formaldehyde resin as binder.
The boards obtained were tested for strength and thermal property. The use of
recovered glass fiber is extended to high strength cement applications wherein
the glass fibers were reinforced with cement mortar and tested for compressive
strength. The optimum percentage of glass fibers, to achieve maximum strength,
in cement mortar was determined through this experiment.
