use of oxidizing agents such as sodium hypochlorite, bleaching powder and
potassium permanganate is quite common to produce various wash effects by
treating cotton readymade garments manufactured from indigo/sulphur yarn/piece
dyed fabrics in a wash wheel in a specialized manner. This being a blind
process, considerable amount of experience and skills are essential. The
unacceptable effects and hence rejects are not alw.ays avoidable. To overcome
these problems, sodium hypochlorite has been applied using Bentonite clay as a
thickener through a technique of screen printing. It is hoped that this
technique would be easily adoptable to produce not only the conventional wash
effects using specially designed screens but also in the production of very
interesting discharge print patterns.

bisazo reactive dyes (VIIa-j) have been prepared by coupling diazotised
6,6'-methylene-bis anthranilic acid (III) with various anilino
cyanurated coupling components, viz. anilino cyanurated H-acid, Schaffer acid,
G-acid, I-acid, K-acid, Tobias acid, N-phenyl J-acid, N-methyl J-acid, Gamma
acid and R-acid (VIa-j), and their dyeing performance on viscose rayon,
wool and silk fibres has been assessed. All the dyes gave a wide range of brown
to blue shades with very good depth and levelness on each fibre. The purity of VIIa-j
was checked by thin layer chromatography. The IR spectra showed all
characteristic bands. The percentage dye-bath exhaustion on different fibres
was reasonably good and acceptable. The dyed fibres showed fair to very good
fastness to light, washing and rubbing.
