Title: Effect of back suction on the twist-tensile strength characteristics of open-end friction-spun cotton yarns Authors: Ibrahim, A R B Abstract: Six cotton yarn packages were spun under different spinning conditions using a laboratory open-end friction-spinner to observe the effect of backsuction on the twist-tensile strength characteristics of open-end friction-spun cotton yarns. It has been observed that backsuction increasesthe amount of twistsalong the length of cotton yarns while the magnitude of pressure used in spinning influences this effect. The yarns spun with backsuction have higher work of rupture, initial modulus, tenacity and higher elongation than those spun without backsuction. The highest tenacity (8.71cN/tex) shown by the package backsuctioned at pressure of 1219.2 mm water gauge is too low for commercial utilization of the yarns. Page(s): 60-62

Title: Some developments in poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibre production and structure-property relationships Authors: Gupta, V B Abstract: Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibre occupies the top place amongst the man-made fibres in the world today. During the past few years, very significant developments have taken place in the technology of its production. The resulting. products like partially-oriented yarns and spin-draw yarns are already well established, while the yarns spun at very high speeds and the micro-denier fibres are showing promise as fibres of the future. These developments have been accompanied by a parallel upsurge in the research and development efforts on PET and its products due to which a more clear understanding of its structure and the underlying fundamentals of structure-property relationships are becoming available. As a result; products to meet specific functional requirements can be designed with increasing confidence. The various developments that have taken place in these areas in the past few years cover a very wide canvas and, therefore, only a few selected developments related to some physical aspects of PET fibre production and structure-property relationships will be considered in this article, the emphasis being on fundamental principles as far as possible. Title: Syntheses of 3-aryl-5-(2-quinolyl)rhodanines, 2-arylimino- 3-(m-methoxyphenyl)-5-(2-quinolyl)rhodanines and 1-aryl-2-methyl-4-(2-quinolylidene)imidazol-5-ones and their dyeing performance on acetate and/or other fibres Authors: Fadda, A A; Etman, H A; Ali, M M; Fouda, A Abstract: 3-Aryl-5-(2-quinolyl)rhodanines (IIIa-j) were prepared by the treatment of quinoline N-oxide (I) with 3-arylrhodanines (IIa-j) at 90°C in the presence of acetic anhydride. The compound IIIf was further treated with different aromatic amines (IVa-d) to give 2-arylimino-3-(m-methoxyphenyl)-5-(2-quinolyl)- rhodanines (Va-d). The compound I was also treated with N-acetylglycine in presence of acetic anhydride and then with different aromatic amines (VIIa-c) to give 1-aryl-2-methyl-4-(2-quinolylidene)imidazol- 5-ones (VIIIa-c). The dyeing performance and the effect of nature and orientation of substituents on the colour of IIIa-j, Va-d and VIIIa-c were also studied and it was observed that all the compounds have good affinity towards polyester fibres followed by polyacrylic and wool fibres. Further, all the compounds show good fastness to washing and acid perspiration on all these fibres. Light fastness on polyacrylic, however, is better than that on polyester and much better than that on wool. Page(s): 34-42

Title: SEM and IR studies on scouring and bleaching of linen Authors: Goswami, K K; Das, N N; Mukherjee, A K Abstract: Sequential removal of wax, water-soluble substances, pectin, hemicellulose and lignin afforded a fabric that mainly contained cellulose along with very small amount of non-cellulosic constituents. The whiteness index of the resultant fabric (59.4) was set as a target for commercial production of bleached linen fabrics and was well achieved by appropriate selection of scouring formulation at pre-bleaching stage and by proper manipulation of bleaching sequences. The durability parameters could be maintained at a satisfactory level by controlled defibrillation of the filaments and optimum retention of the non-cellulosic constituents. The entire chemical process was monitored using a Cambridge SEM (Stereoscan 250) and 250-30 Hitachi Spectrophotometer. Page(s): 27-33
