Merino, Chokla and Malpura sheep wools were treated with sodium thiogIycollate
solution of 0.5 M at 10.0 pH for 24 h at 0°C.The untreated and treated
fibres were tested for stress-strain properties in air (65 ± 5% RH and 27 ±
2°C) and in water (27 ± 2°C). The different parameters of the stress-strain
curve were analyzed taking into consideration their dependence on the tex value
of the fibres. The genetic groups differed in certain characteristics. Also,
the interaction was significant in many others. The treatment in general
weakened the stress-strain parameters as the thioglycollate reduces the
disulphide bonds in wool fibre. The percentage change in parameters differed
among the breeds.

scanning electron microscope, showed that the fungus grew mainly on the pectin
present on the surface of the bark and in the region between the fibre strands,
without affecting the cell walls of the fibres. Chemical analysis of the treated
samples confirmed this. These observations accord with those of earlier
workers.
