cellobiose, a basic unit of cellulose, was carried out in a mixture of N, N-dimethylformamide
and phosphorus oxychloride at different temperatures in the range 40-80°C and
the products of the reaction were subjected to DTA studies. The thermograrns
show an endothermic activity in the region 170-230°C in air. The single
endotherm at 200°C in air has been found to be shifted to 180°C in nitrogen
atmosphere. This lowering of the peak temperature is attributed to the effect of
synergism of nitrogen gas in combination with phosphorus present in the
phosphorylated products of cellobiose. The IR spectra of the residues, obtained
after partial or complete charring of the phosphorylated products in the

amines and the effect of halogen on fastness properties, viz. washing, rubbing
and light, was studied. The absorption spectra of dissolved dyed fibre in the
visible region are reported. All the halo aromatic amines used produce
attractive shades varying from orange to violet, on both cotton and wool.
Comparison of shades and fastness properties with those obtained with aniline
shows very little change in shade and no change in washing fastness. Contrary
to the expectation, halo aromatic amines lower the light fastness in reactive
azoic dyeing. For cotton fibres, rubbing fastness remains unaltered, while wool
fibres show some increase. The introduction of halogen in aromatic amine shifts
