    <summary type="text">Title: Textural characteristics of nearshore sediments off Honnavar, south west coast of India

Abstract: Textural characteristics of the sediments off Honnavar, south West coast of India, revealed that the sediments were generally clayey in nature. It is poorly sorted, positively skewed and mesokurtic. The positive skewness of the sediments are indicative of low energy conditions in the nearshore region promoting accumulation of fine fraction of sediments. The poor sorting implied that the transportation agencies were incapable of separating the sediments into different size grades. Multigroup discrimination analysis suggests that these sediments are derived from shallow marine origin and contributed by salinity and differential settling velocities.

    <summary type="text">Title: Length and weight relationship of laboratory reared penaeid prawn Penaeus monodon (Fabricius) (Crustacea : Penaeidae)

Abstract: A parabolic relationship was obtained while studying the length-weight relationship of the postlarvae of Penaeus monodo. The b value (multiplying constant) showed that in the laboratory reared penaeid prawns, length-weight relationship strictly followed the cube law. The weight of the prawn increased at the rate of more or less cube of the length. The relationship was found to be significant (p &lt; 0.001). At 95% confidence limit the b values were between 3.0524 and 4.3691. ANOYA showed that there is a significant difference between the length and weight relationship (p &lt; 0.001). The two-way analysis of the variance also showed a very high correlation between relative increment in length and weight with temperature (p &lt; 0.05). The influence of temperature on weight was more as compared to the length and a decrease in relative weight was observed at low temperature (P &lt; 0.05).

    <summary type="text">Title: Copper induced alterations in enzyme activities in the intertidal clam Gafrarium divaricatum (Mollusca/Bivalvia)

Abstract: The specific activities of acid and alkaline phosphatases, aspartate and alanine amino transferases and ATPase were found altered in various degrees in gills, hepatopancreas and adductor muscles of the intertidal clam Gafrarium divaricatum after exposure to 10 and 25 mu g/l of copper for a month. The changes in enzyme activities in experimental clams are attributed to the presence of copper in the surrounding medium of the clams.

    <summary type="text">Title: Trace element concentration in the meat of the edible clam Marcia recens Chemnitz (Pelecypoda : Veneridae)

Abstract: Trace element concentration in soft tissues of Marcia recens was analyzed in terms of its safety to human consumption, sex and season. Distribution of elements in whole soft tissue in descending order was zinc 38.76 +/- 9.63, copper 8.85 +/- 3.86, lead 4.83 +/- 2.06, nickel 1.41 +/- 1.19 and cadmium 0.66 +/- 0.71 mu g g(-1) dry wt. Except cadmium, concentration of all other elements studied (Zn, Cu, Pb) were found to be higher in females than in males. Only for Cu statistically significant difference was noticed between the seasons among the various elements studied. Concentration of all trace elements in the meat of M. recens are below the permissible limits for human consumption.
