Authors: Manohar, G K; Kandalgaonkar, S S; Murty, Bh V Ramana
Abstract: Observations of surface electric field near ground were made at Raichur (lat., 16°12'N; long., 77°21'E; 389.5 m asl) during the total solar eclipse of 16 Feb. 1980. The electric field decreased reaching a minimum 9 min before totality and increased subsequently, reaching 200% of the minimum value at totality and again decreased nearly to the same value within 5 min following totality. An attempt has been made to explain this intriguing feature.

Authors: Chauhan, N S
Abstract: The response of F-layer at Hyderabad to the total solar eclipse of 16 Feb 1980 is studied by means of theoretical modelling. A model of the eclipse function based on the observation of 10.7-cm solar flux at Hyderabad, is used in solving the time-varying equation of continuity of plasma for the F-layer. It is found that the F2-peak electron density gets depressed and the layer goes up during the eclipse. The computed results so obtained are qualitatively similar to the observations made during the total solar eclipse on 16 Feb 1980.

Authors: Aggarwal, S
Abstract: The monthly medians of F-region parameters used in HF communications are predictable to a reasonably good level of accuracy for a given place, season and solar activity. However, the extent of rather large apparently random variations around the median parameters deteriorate the quality of communications unless quantified in advance and compensated for. Coefficients of variation indicating the extent of such variability are calculated for a low latitude station in a number of relevant parameters over a complete solar cycle which show that the decaying phase of the cycle suffers from larger variability compared to the growing phase, especially for noon values. For Ahmedabad, a station at the anomaly peak, the diurnal maximum shows smaller variability near the peak of the cycle. The variability in 10.7-cm flux is greater around the solar maximum but has little correlation with <i>f</i>0F2 variability.

Authors: Kumar, P Pradeep; Rai, J
Abstract: For the purpose of measurement of electrical parameters of lightning discharge, instruments have been fabricated to record the electrostatic and radiation field changes. Some measurements have been presented. It has been argued that the above measurements will be very useful in the study of the fine structure and mechanism of intracloud lightning discharges.
