Authors: Kumar, A Raghu; Rao, M Purnachandra; Murthy, J S R; Rao, A S Mohana; Rao, C Poornachandra
Abstract: Sea breeze at Visakhapatnamis influenced by the unique combination of topographic meteorological and oceanographic features To characterize the main features of sea breeze as it penetrates inland, two monostatic acoustic sounders have been operated simultaneousliy in May 1983 one at the University site about 1 km away from the coastline and other at the airport meteorological observatory about 11 km west inland. From the sounder records of the two sites and the supporting meteorological data it has been observed that the sea breeze at the two locations differs considerably in respect of its onset, duration, depth and thermal turbulence distribution. This marked variability is attributed to the peculiar orography of the locale.

Authors: Patil, Asha; Arora, B R; Rastogi, R G
Abstract: The signatures of solar quiet day (Sq) variation in the geomagnetic field components at Gulmarg and other midlatitude stations in the India- USSR region are used to determine the focus latitude and intensity of the Sq current system for each month of the year. The focus latitude in its annual progression shows a sharp southward shift in August and a northward shift in October and November. Intensity modulation of the current system is accompanied by significant deformation, particularly in the second half of the year. During summer and equinoxes, Sq focus appears to be in south of Gulmarg in the morning hours and moves back to north of Gulmarg in the afternoon.

Authors: Singh, Pratap; Verma, T S; Varshneya, N C
Abstract: The effect of corona space charge on growth rate of ground electric field beneath a thundercloud has been studied. The maximum electric fields have been calculated at the ground surface and aloft. It has been found that the corona limits the magnitude of the electrostatic field and also influences the time behaviour of the electric field at the ground surface. The computed results are found to be in good agreement with the available experimental observations.

Authors: Pathak, P P; Hazarika, S
Abstract: Radiated power in VLF range from lightning discharges over different types of ground is calculated. The effect of ground conductivity is found to be maximum on the radiation from horizontal lightning. Radiation from return stroke is found to be unaffected. Probable use in the measurement of ground conductivity at VLF has been discussed.
