Authors: Ghosh, S K; Jana, T K
Abstract: Apparent dissociation constants of carbonic acid (K1*, K2*) were determined at atmospheric pressure in estuarine waters of Hugli. Based on the observed results the following relations were found in the temperature range of 5-degrees-C less-than-or-equal-to t less-than-or-equal-to 35-degrees-C and in the salinity range of 0.1 less-than-or-equal-to S less-than-or-equal-to 31.73. pK1* = 5.296-6.617 x 10(-5).S2 + 304.8214 x 1/T - 1.657 x 10(-4) ln T x S, pK2* = 7.4206 - 3.119 x 10(-4).S2 + 602.121 x 1/T-4.215 x 10(-3) ln T x S. These relations were compared with the interpolated equations.

Authors: Mehta, Pratik; Kadam, A N; Gajbhiye, S N; Desai, B N
Abstract: Concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons in 6 fish and prawn species sampled at 10 transects from Veraval to Ratnagiri were determined using alkali digestion and alumina column chromatography followed by fluorescence spectroscopy. Efficiency of the method was in the range of 36.9-78.5% for 1-10 mug.g-1, wet wt chrysene concentrations. The levels observed were low ranging from 0.2 to 10.0 mug.g-1 (wet wt, chrysene equivalent units). The most abundant species Johnius glaucus and Coilila dussumieri showed comparatively higher levels of petroleum hydrocarbons than others. Samples from Bassein and Thana creeks as well as from Bassein and Bombay coastal stations revealed relatively high accumulations. Comparison of values with concentrations in water and sediment from corresponding locations was discussed.

Authors: Dious, S R J; Kasinathan, R
Abstract: Biochemical composition and trace metals content of C. nucleus and M. ceylonicus were studied. Meat weight, water content, dry weight, protein, carbohydrate and lipid varied with the reproductive cycle of the organisms. Fe showed high and Cu showed low concentrations of metals analysed. Absence of gills and wide mantle surface prevented high metal accumulation, hence the concentrations were more or less uniform throughout the year in both species.

Authors: Sree, V Jaya; Parulekar, A H; Wahidulla, S; Kamat, S Y
Abstract: Biochemical composition of body wall and gonads of H. leucospilota was analysed for protein, carbohydrate, lipid, ash, dry weight and calorific values and was discussed in relation to its spawning activities. Lipids constituted the major storage part (2.5 to 30.55%) followed by proteins (1.08 to 3.74%) and carbohydrates (0.00006 to 0.00041%) in the body wall, but in gonads, the lipids, proteins and carbohydrates were 1.8 to 6.1%, 1.06 to 2.6% and 0.00001 to 0.00009% respectively.
