Authors: Alsayed, A; Ghaddaf, M
Abstract: An attempt was made to investigate the annual fish mortality and the influence of upwelling process during southwest monsoon. The sharp change in the temperature, salinity and variation in the topography of oxygen minimum layer have strong effect on fish mortality in the northern part Gulf of Aden.

Authors: Pillai, Devika; Jayabalan, N
Abstract: Advanced post larvae;of Penaeus indicus challenged with Vibrio harveyi inoculum levels of 10(3), 10(4) and 10(5) CFU.ml(-1) for 96 h did not show luminescence or other clinical signs of luminous vibriosis. Though the exposed larvae were normal, accepted feed, and were active till the termination of experiment, the isolation of bacteria from haemolymph suggests their opportunistic pathogenicity: It appears that virulence of the strains, and susceptibility of hosts are Important factors leading to mortality of prawn larvae in hatcheries.

Authors: Dhevendaran, K; Radha, S; Natarajan, P
Abstract: Water, sediment and husk samples collected from the retting ground of Anchuthengu region, Kerala, for beta-glucosidase producing microorganisms showed wide variations. Screening of 12 bacterial strains for beta-glucosidase activity and growth exhibited narrow ranges. Sodium chloride, sodium sulfide and threonine were essential for growth and synthesis of beta-glucosidase.

Authors: Kala, R Ratha; Chandrika, V
Abstract: Out of many recommended media for selective isolation of actinomycetes from soil; glucose asparagine agar, Grein and Meyer's agar, oat meal agar and Kuster's agar were found suitable for isolation of actinomycetes from mangrove sediments. The best media allowing good development of actinomycetes, while suppressing bacterial growth, were those containing starch or glucose as the carbon source with casein, and asparagine or nitrate as the nitrogen source. Seawater-agar was also tried for isolation and maintenance and found extremely good as a maintenance medium. Bacteriostatic and fungistatic compounds such as calcium carbonate, phenol, lactic acid and acetic acid were used for selective isolation of actinomycetes,
