Authors: Diwan, A D; Usha, T
Abstract: Organic reserves like lipid, cholesterol, protein, glycogen and glucose in muscle, hepatopancreas and haemolymph of Penaeus indicus during different stages of moult cycle were estimated. High values of these organic reserves obtained at early premoult stage (D1) followed by a significant decrease at late premoult stage (D4) indicated marked storage and subsequent utilization during stages D1 to D4. Low values were observed at stage A (early post-moult) confirming depletion in the reserves just after moulting. High percentage of water found in the muscle during post-moult stage A and low values during premoult stage (D1), in contrast to the pattern observed for organic reserves during this period substantiated the concept of tissue growth by replacement of water during the periods between the moults.

Authors: Prabhu, Venkatesh; Reddy, M P M
Abstract: Benthic biomass in the Arabian Sea off Baikampady-Suratkal varied from 0.08 to 113.24 g.m-2 during January to December 1983. Polychaetes were the most consistent group followed by molluscs and echiurids. Organic carbon content in sediments varied from 0.75 to 2.44% and the sediment was mainly constituted by silt-clay fraction. A direct relationship was observed between the benthic biomass and demersal fish catches during most of the months.

Title: Benthos off Cochin, southwest coast of India
Authors: Harkantra, S N; Parulekar, A H
Abstract: Macro-invertebrate benthic fauna off Cochin mainly composed of polychaeta (82.45%), crustacea (7.62%), mollusca (5.92%), sipuncula (2.25%), nemertinea (0.96%) and echinodermata (0.80%). The maximum population density and biomass values were 304 ± 25 m-2 and 2.37 ± 0.32 g.m.-2 respectively. The fauna were relatively rich in medium size particles than the finer particles. The population density and biomass decreased with increase in depth. It seems that depth, sediment characteristics, dissolved oxygen and availability of food are important factors in the distribution and abundance of sediment dwelling macro-fauna in the sub-littoral region off Cochin.

Abstract: Chromulina freiburgensis and I. galbana, isolated from inshore waters of Cochin have pigment spectrum comprising chlorophyll a and c, β-carotene, fucoxanthin and an unidentified yellow fraction. The rate of photosynthesis of these flagellates increases with light intensity reaching a maximum at 34-35 x 1015 quanta cm-2 sec-1. The onset of saturation of photosynthesis (Ik) is at 24 x 1015 quanta cm-2 sec-1.
