Authors: Raman, A V; Ganapati, P N
Abstract: Waters from stations located along the decreasing grade of organic pollution in the harbour revealed abnormally high concentrations of nutrients poor transparency, fluctuating salinity, high BOD and highly varying dissolved oxygen in contrast to waters from open sea station which is comparatively free of pollution. High inputs of industrial and domestic wastes containing phosphorus and nitrogen coupled with sluggish circulation appear to be the probable causes for the eutrophication of water in harbour area.

Abstract: Concentration (µg.l -1) of particulate organic matter, particulate organic carbon, total particulate nitrogen and total particulate phosphorus in southwest Bay of Bengal during June 1985 varied from 322.4 to 1286.1 to 746, 62.8 to 198.2 and 1.12 to 4.17 respectively. The values showed high degree of variation in coastal samples than in offshore samples.

Abstract: Hg, Cd & Zn present at sublethal concentrations (Hg ranging from 1 to 10,cd from 25 to 400 and Zn from 10 to 100 ppb) induce reduction in the rate of oxygen uptake in P. indica. All these metals thus function as respiratory depressants.

Title: Heterogeneity in Juvenile population of prawns from different aquatic biotopes, Porto Novo, East coast of India
Authors: Sambasivam, S; Krishnamurthy, K
Abstract: Community structure and assemblage of economically important benthic penaeid non-penaeid juvenile prawns form different biotopes, viz estuarine (st 1), backwaters (st 2) and mangroves (st 3) were studied (1977-1979). St 1 showed maximum diversity index (2.52 bits of individuals per unit) coinciding with the occurrence of maximum number of species. The species richness values varied between 0.46 and 1 while values of evenness or equitability ranged between 0.21 and 0.97. The low diversity values occurred during northeast monsoon season.
