    <summary type="text">Title: Distribution Patterns of Aluminium, Titanium, Manganese, Copper and Nickel in Sediments of the Northern Half of the Western Continental Shelf of India

Abstract: Studies on the distribution patterns of various elements coupled with the distribution pattern of calcium carbonate have revealed that (i) along any given section across the shelf, relatively high concentrations of all the elements are associated with the terrigenous sediments than those with the relict sediments of the outer shelf, (ii) elements like titanium, manganese and copper exhibit regional differences from north to south and (iii) manganese, nickel and copper (on carbonate-free basis) tend to be enriched in clays and silty clays of the outer shelf region. While variations across the shelf are attributed to the association of elements with the terrigenous material to a large extent, variations along the shelf (from north to south) are attributed to the differences in the mineralogical composition of sediments. These studies have also revealed that the effect of Indus river system is profound on the shelf between Indus canyon and Gulf of Kutch, marginal between Gulf of Kutch and Gulf of Cambay and least in the rest of the region.

    <summary type="text">Title: Carbonate Lumps in the Lawson's Bay Area, Visakhapatnam, East Coast of India

Abstract: Modern carbonate lumps are found in the Lawson's Bay area. The carbonate lumps are inferred to have been deposited by biochemical process in the littoral zone. Abundant high Mg-calcite with subordinate aragonite and dolomite are the minerals in the carbonates. Aragonite and dolomite are considered to have been formed by the diagenetic alteration of high Mg-calcite. Amphiroa fragilissima and Chaetomorpha sp. are the dominant algal forms present in the carbonates. No direct evidence on the age of carbonates in the bay could be obtained.

    <summary type="text">Title: Acoustic Ambient Noise of the Cochin backwaters

Abstract: Results of weekly field observations over 1 yr on the acoustic ambient noise levels at 3 stations in the Cochin backwaters are presented. The recorded noise are subjected to a 1/3 octave analysis using audio frequency spectrometer and oscilloscope. Monthly variations of ambient noise show 2 maxima and 2 minima which are closely related to the population variations due to the occurrence of the 2 monsoons. In the higher frequency range monthly variations of the ambient noise have been found related to the shrimp population of the backwaters. Throughout the year the pressure spectrum level shows a marked decrease with increase in frequency.

    <summary type="text">Title: Observations on Fine Structure in the Northern Arabian Sea

Abstract: Vertical profiles of temperature and salinity, obtained using a STD recorder, from the northern Arabian Sea revealed the presence of fine structures characterized by homogeneous layers separated by interfaces. The layers were generally regions of low stability. Fluctuations of temperature and salinity were maximum in the thermocline (about 0.5° C and 0.2% respectively). Temperature showed an increased fine structure activity with the formation of seasonal thermocline. Deeper waters, below thermocline, showed the fine structure activity with less amplitudes of fluctuations and larger layer thicknesses. Blobs of temperature and salinity at about 180 m observed in the thermocline near the mouth of Persian Gulf may be due to gross overturning of internal waves. Possibility of double-diffusion as a causative factor for the layerings is also discussed.
