Authors: Prakash, Amar; Anandavalli, N
Abstract: Steel-concrete composite construction technique is being used in developed nations for last few decades. For obtaining accelerated growth in fast emerging Indian economy, it is becoming necessary to adopt best construction techniques and practices. On one side there is considerable construction of new roads, bridges, flyovers and buildings taking place on daily basis, on the other side we can foresee the effect of such activities on our limited resources and environment. Therefore, it is vital task for all designers, engineers and policy makers. It must be ensured and all the possible way that the best constructional techniques must be adopted to protect both, our depleting resources and environment. Steel-concrete composite construction technique comprises of synergetic bonding between steel girder and reinforced concrete slab using mechanical connectors. In this technical paper stud type shear connectors have been used. In the market, various shapes and sizes are available. The main advantages of this construction method are lightweight foundation structure, faster constructing method, ease in construction and above all the quicker recovery of investments towards development. In the present technical paper, various internal mechanisms and processes are explained. The results of the experiments conducted by authors have also been briefly discussed. The special attention is given to understand internal force resistance mechanics and also the failure patterns due to excess loads than maximum capacity of steel concrete composite girders. Based on experimental results and available literature it has been obtained that we can easily obtain about 30% saving in total investment by adopting composite construction technique.

Authors: Kumar, Ajay; Kumar, Ravindra
Abstract: It is commonly recognized that reliability in travel time is a significant factor to consider, as it not only wields a significant impact on traveller behaviour, but also substantially impacts the general efficiency of transport systems. Predictability measure for Travel time Sequence is probabilistic approach that depends on historical data. To measure the reliability of travel time sequence from the perspective of predictability, entropy plays an important role. To estimate the entropy of such a travel time sequence Lempel-Ziv data compression algorithm can be used but Lempel-Ziv scanned the whole historical string for the exactly identical substring. So, in entropy estimation process some partially similar substring or subsequence gets overlooked. For deep analysis, longest common subsequence (LCS) algorithm is employed to calculate exactly identical substring and most similar subsequence. LCS algorithm discarded redundant subsequence's which further reduce entropy. This lead to increase in predictability of travel time sequence. Thus, the combination of LZ and LCS give more accurate predictability and easily can be implemented for travel time forecasting in ITS to calculate prediction rate for next travel time based on given travel time sequence.

Authors: Rana, Rajesh; Lakshmy, P
Abstract: A large quantity of concrete is used to construct any structure like bridges. Concrete is a heterogeneous material due to which there are chances of micro pores in it. Through these micro pores, the seepage of water is a common problem that deteriorates the reinforced steel present in these structures. The seepage of water reduces the strength of structure due to the attack of corrosion in the reinforced steel. To prevent such seepage and to increase the life of bridges, waterproofing of bridge deck is an important technique. This technique helps to make waterproof of precast segmental bridges. This paper present the evaluation of various properties of APP and SBS types of waterproofing membranes used in bridge deck and their affect on the durability of bridge deck. For the evaluation of different properties of waterproofing membrane CSIR-CRRI developed various test fixtures according to BD 47/99, ASTM, EN and IS standards. The different properties of waterproofing membrane which affect the durability of bridge deck are Tensile and Tear Strength, Adhesion strength, Low flexibility temperature, softening point etc. From this study, it is concluded that SBS is more effecting than APP in cold regions and vice-versa because the low flexibility of SBS is higher and the softening point of APP is higher.

Abstract: Nowadays, Environment Sustainability and effective use of natural resources is a great concern. To build hundreds of kilometres of roadway it involves huge amount of natural resources and we know that our natural resources are in very limited quantity. To save our limited resources any sustainable approach or any green technology or any method that can let us use our resources effectively is welcomed. One such approach for the sustainability of the environment is presented in this paper through the different pavement design approaches. In recent years, cement concrete pavements are being adopted in many new road projects in India in view of their longer service lives, lesser maintenance requirements and smoother riding surface. In this paper, National Highway-10 (Hisar and Dabwali) and National Highway-73 (Punchkula and Yamunanagar) is designed by three methods i.e. by IRC Method which is followed in India and by AASHTO method and PCA Method which are used in American countries. As the IRC method is partly based on the recommendations of AASHTO method and PCA method, it is required to compare the methods to know which is having more economical approach. Through this paper it is found that the IRC gives relatively less thickness as compared to other methods. By this finding we can say that in IRC method the quantity of materials required such as aggregate, bitumen etc.is less which in turn saves our natural resources and preserves our resources for future use. It is also found that the IRC method is more economical.
