Authors: Gond, R K; Gupta, M K
Abstract: Nanofibres have been obtained from sugarcane bagasse through different chemical treatments and mechanical grinding process. These nanofibres are then used for the preparation of their PLA-based biodegradable films by the solvent casing method using various weight percentages (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 &amp;amp; 5) of nanofibres. The morphological analysis, tensile properties, thermal property and optical properties of the films are characterized by field emission electron microscopy, tensile test, thermogravimetric analysis and UV-Vis spectrometers respectively. The film with 2 wt. % of nanofibre is found to offer the highest tensile strength (24.5 %) which is 57-55 % more than that of neat PLA film. The thermal and optical properties of PLA films are also significantly influenced by the incorporation of nanofibres. Based on the results obtained from the present study, the prepared biodegradable nanofibre films can be used in nanofabrics and for packaging applications.

Authors: Abel, Patricia Julie; Unmar, Roshan; Rosunee, Satyadev; Hes, Lubos
Abstract: A semi-empirical model of the relative contact area of woven fabrics has been developed. Its output is implemented into a multiple linear regression model of thermal absorptivity of 100% cotton woven fabrics as a predictor, together with open area, areal density, thickness and fabric density. Validation of the thermal absorptivity model shows that the contribution of the relative contact area and its interaction term with areal density generates lowest values of the mean and maximum percentage errors, indicating good predictability of the thermal contact feeling. The model is not applicable for nonwovens.

Authors: Bansal, Payal; Sikka, Monica; Choudhary, AK
Abstract: The current study has been conducted on 100% cotton, polyester/cotton and cotton/lycra single jersey fabrics for investigation of seam performance in term of seam strength and seam efficiency. The influence of various parameters, viz. sewing needle size, sewing needle type and seam angle, on seam performance of these fabrics have been studied and analyzed. The response surface methodology is employed to investigate their effect on seam strength and seam efficiency by analysis of variance and regression equations. The test results reveal that cotton and cotton/lycra fabrics have lower seam strength as compared to polyester/cotton fabric. Also, with increase in seam angle and needle size, seam strength decreases. However, with sewing needle type, an increase in seam strength is observed for all the three fabrics. The cotton/lycra half plated fabric shows higher seam efficiency among all the three fabrics. It is noted that seam efficiency increases with seam angle and sewing needle type. It has been found that SES needle type (Small ball point) exhibits poor seam efficiency but an improvement in efficiency has been observed with SUK (Medium ball point) and SAN needle type (Conical point) for all three knitted fabrics.

<summary type="text">Title: Tensile behaviour of woven velour printed terry fabrics
Authors: Ram, Sanjeev Kumar; Singh, J P
Abstract: The present research work is focused to design terry fabrics in such a way that their overall performance can be improved. Three important constructional variables, such as pile height, pick density and pile count (one ply and two ply both), have been optimised for maximum tensile strength of woven velour printed terry fabric. Thirty samples have been prepared as per Box – Behnken design of experiments. Results obtained clearly state that the pile height has negative interaction effect on pick density and yarn count both. Hence, if one wants to increase the fabric strength by increasing pick density and coarseness of warp, the pile height should be kept constant or should be reduced. The results mentioned above are found true for both the fabrics having single ply and double ply pile yarns. The tensile strength of the fabrics having double ply pile yarn is always higher as compared to fabric having single ply pile yarn.
