Authors: BISWAL, PROF. ASHUTOSH; PANDEY, ADITI
Abstract: The skill of analysing and evaluating information is very important in
the 21st century knowledge economy. Scientific temper is such a bent of
mind which helps one in this skill by thinking rationally and logically.
Scientific temper is considered as one of the fundamental duties which
is also identified as the most important 21st century skill in the National
Education Policy, 2020. Hence, it is expected that the present youth
comprising school and college should have scientific temper as per the
need of the time. It is also important to know the level of scientific
temper among our school and college going students so that required
measures can be taken up to develop this skill.
The present study is an attempt to find out the scientific temper
among secondary school students. Descriptive survey method was
adopted for this purpose. 272 IX standard students were taken as the
sample from the schools of Vadodara District using convenient
sampling method. A scale was prepared, validated and used by the
researchers to measure the scientific temper. Mean, SD and Mann
Whitney U test were used for statistical analysis of data. The findings
of the study revealed an above average level of scientific temper
among secondary school students as a whole and in all the eight
components of scientific temper with high deviation. No significant
differences were observed between the mean scores of secondary
school boys and girls in scientific temper as a whole and in all the
eight components.

Abstract: The reporting of research and development is very important for any
organisation as it is not only simple reporting to keep the general public
updated on the developments but as it also involves critical evaluation of
different programmes and activities. The present study is the quantitative
analysis of 2382 unique news items, related to 59 ISRO missions
launched during the period 2011-2020, retrieved from the Bangalore
edition of four popular English print newspapers namely Deccan Herald,
The Hindu, The New Indian Express, and The Times of India.
The collected data was further categorised into different missions
based on their applications for analysis. By applying one full credit
for each mission covered in the news items, a total of 3729 news
items were found. Of all the ISRO missions launched during the
period of study, GSLV-MkIII-M1/Chandrayaan-2 had the highest
news coverage with 742 (19.89 per cent) news items followed by
PSLV-C25/Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan) with 601 (16.12 per
cent) news items. The study further observed that there is no
uniformity in reporting and coverage among the selected newspapers.

Abstract: The livelihood strategies of the tribal communities are diverse from other
communities as the ecological surrounding area, population size,
language, physical features and level of development vary in the
scheduled tribe’s categories. A tribal population in Uttarakhand resides in
long Tarai and far-flung remote hilly regions, where livelihood and
development are a matter of hardship. In fact, the basic health facilities,
sensitization about quality drinking water and many more are in
adequate. The tribe’s areas are most neglected and highly vulnerable to
diseases with a high degree of malnutrition, morbidity and mortality.
Their misery is compounded by poverty, illiteracy, ignorance of the
causes of diseases, hostile environment, poor sanitation, lack of safe
drinking water and blind beliefs, etc. Water from the different sources is
being polluted by different means such as domestic waste, weathering of
rocks, anthropogenic activities and sewage effluents, etc., which affect
the physicochemical and biological properties of water, which ultimately
create havoc among the tribes by many water-borne diseases.

Title: Can Images with Isolated Looped Motion or “Cinemagraphs” Improve Science Communication Design?
Authors: KHAN, FARHAT BASIR
Abstract: Science communication is not a new concept; scientists have been trying
to communicate their scientific findings and theories to the general
population for centuries. The communication meant for non-scientists is
particularly complex, considering their limited understanding of the
subject and weak grasp of certain concepts. Visual communication design
has been used in the form of infographics, photographs and illustrations
for the popularisation of science.
The use of cinemagraphs or images with isolated looped motion
could present an interesting option to communicators to convey
focused visual messages. A survey was conducted to see if a group
of students (n=120) and teachers (n=28) of a science & technology
university saw any value in the use of cinemagraphs. The
cinemagraph was deemed to be 42% more informative than the still
image by the students and 29% more informative by the teachers.
The participants also found the cinemagraphs to be more useful
and attractive than the other formats. Different kinds of motions were
defined in the cinemagraphs. participants preferred “small slow
subtle motion”, “large intermittent motion” and “dispersed localized
motion” over the still images and the videos by a wider margin.
While making cinemagraphs, picking the right subject to highlight
and using the right kind of motion can be used to improve focus and
convey messages in a more attractive and useful manner and this
could be crucial in improving science communication, especially for
the non-scientists.
