Abstract: Longitudinal and vertical distribution of salinity field in the Vellar River Estuary (VRE) was investigated across the lower, mid and upper estuarine zone, monthly from January to December 2011. The hydrological survey of VRE revealed shallow bathymetry with a complex topography and a mean tidal amplitude of around 0.9 to 1 m. The depth-averaged tidal velocity had a magnitude that was observed with a maximum value of 0.56 m/s at the estuarine mouth and was indirectly proportional to the increasing distance from the mouth. The wind speed fluctuated from 1 to 4.1 km h-1 with a mean of 2.5±0.82 km h-1. The temperature ranged from 25.32 °C to 32.93 °C with a mean of 28.89±2.26 °C while salinity varied between 0 to 34 psu with a mean of 13±12.77 psu and negatively correlated with rainfall (r = -0.69; p = 0.04). A higher stratification number, i.e. ns ~ 1 at the lower estuarine zone indicated the formation of the salt wedge in the monsoon while during the rest of the year the estuarine water column was observed to be homogeneous. Wave height, tide and currents were estimated through 2D hydrodynamic models and they were significantly correlated with in-situ data. Recorded seasonal variation in salinity stratification of VRE from the present work reflected on shaping the primary governing factors on estuarine circulation at spatial and temporal scales.

Authors: Cherian, T; Jamal, W; Eranhottu, S; Yalla, S K; Mohanraju, R
Abstract: Marine bacteria are of extensive significance as new ‘budding springs’ of a vast number of organic active artefacts. Till now,
only a fraction of microorganisms have been scrutinized for bioactive metabolites, yet a colossal sum of these metabolites with
unique structural drafts remains untouched and unexploited. In this respect, the species of Bacillus vietnamensis was isolated from
the marine sediments of Chidiyatapu coast, South Andaman and characterized by both phenotypic and genotypic methods. The
anti-oxidative activities of the methanolic extract were determined by the estimation of TPC (Total Phenolic Content), reducing
power, free radical scavenging assay and ferric thiocyanate method. Antibacterial activity of the methanolic extract was analyzed
by an agar well diffusion assay confirming the presence of active metabolites of various functional groups by FT-IR, thereby
warranting a ‘combinatorial approach’ for applicative pharmacological settings.

Authors: A T, Ram; P T, Paul
Abstract: Diversity and species composition of mangrove-associated cyanobacteria from the South West Coast of India showed the occurrence of 16 species representing 3 orders, 6 families, and 10 genera based on morpho-taxonomic characterization, which is supported by the microscopic evaluation. The present study recorded planktic (7 spp.), epipsammic (4 spp.), epiphytic (2 spp.), corticolous (2 spp.) and 1 benthic species. Among these, six taxa were reported for the first time from the marine ecosystem of India. The present study aims to facilitate our knowledge of the taxonomy, diversity, habitat and geographical distribution of the mangrove-associated cyanobacteria in India.

Authors: Santhoshkumar, S; Jawahar, P; Sundaramoorthy, B; Jayakumar, N; Srinivasan, A; Subburaj, A
Abstract: Six species of mantis shrimps were recorded in the trawl catches of Nagapattinam region during January – December, 2018. The occurrence of two species namely Oratosquilla oratoria (De Haan, 1844) and Oratosquillina gravieri (Manning, 1978) were reported for the first time in the trawl bycatches of Nagapattinam region. The morphometrics of these two species is reported in this paper. Presence of inferodistal spine in the merus of the raptorial claw, rostral plate short and trapezoid to square in shape, 5th abdominal segment without submedian patch, 4th abdominal segment submedian carinae unarmed in Oratosquilla oratoria and rostral plate elongate and rectangle, lateral process of 6th thoracic somite with slender, triangular anterior lobe and dactylus of the raptorial claw with 6 teeth in Oratosquillina gravieri are chief characters to differentiate from other species.
