Authors: GP, VINAY; MR, SATHYAPRAKASH
Abstract: In the age of knowledge-based civilisations, science and technology
are essential for development, modernisation, and a booming
economy. The practice of informing the public about these critically
important science and technological issues through various forms of
mass media could be termed as one of the important means of science
communication. Critical analysis of the literature has revealed that
print media appears to be educating the masses more on science and
technology issues than other media. RNI 2018-19 report reveals that
around 80 per cent of the nation’s print media is in Indian languages
and the circulation and readership base is gradually increasing in the
rural areas. The same rural background people are suffering from
various superstitions, black magic, etc., and losing innovative
opportunities due to the lack of knowledge on local resources usage.
The present study employed a content analysis technique and
enquired about the trends that exist in the coverage of science and
technology information by selecting two statewide Kannada language
dailies. The study found that science dissemination is still
insignificant in comparison to the coverage of other categories.
Science publication is still event oriented (episodic) in nature while
Agriculture, Environment, Astronomy, and Defense subtopics gained
high prominence. The news was the dominant format and around
80 per cent of stories were published along with a picture/illustration.

Authors: DEKA, JUNALI; SHUKLA, SHRUTI
Abstract: As our country is one of the fastest-growing major economies in the
world, it is imperative that every citizen, particularly the youth, must
contribute to nation-building for further acceleration in economic
growth and prosperity. India has the immense potential to reap rich
demographic dividends if the youths are adequately empowered and
engaged by implementing appropriate, effective and timely policies. A
nation witnesses incredible economic growth when there is scope for
the continuous flourishing of science, technology and innovation. This
unequivocally calls for enrichment in science education among school
goers. In an effort to identify and tap the bright and creative young
minds in India, there are government-funded several programmes for
science education and promotion. An example of one such remarkable
programme is ‘Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan’ launched recently by the
Ministry of Education, Government of India. The pertinent question
arises here whether there is equality in getting access to government
initiatives by the youths across the length and breadth of the nation.
The present article attempts to understand this particular scenario by
pursuing a field study among high school students studying in schools
situated in remote areas of the Sonitpur district in Assam. The article
also highlighted the media interventions to be undertaken to make the
initiatives for science education and promotion more accessible and
attractive.

Title: PCK for Developing Understanding of NOS: A Review of Past Studies
Authors: MALHOTRA, GEETANJALI; MASIH, AEJAZ
Abstract: The term ‘Nature of Science’ (NOS) is often used to refer to distinctive
characteristics of scientific enterprise and qualities of scientists. An
adequate understanding of NOS is crucial for better decision-making and
a positive scientific attitude. Teachers are expected to develop this
understanding among their students for which they require an
understanding of various aspects of NOS (e.g. scientific knowledge is
tentative or science involves creativity). In addition, they need knowledge
of how learners’ misconceptions about NOS and scientists can be
challenged with the help of appropriate strategies. This knowledge base
of teachers is popularly referred to as ‘PCK for NOS’ (Pedagogical
Content Knowledge (PCK) for teaching NOS). This knowledge base is
complex. How far teachers possess it needs investigation. In the present
paper, the authors have provided a review of studies revealing the status
of teachers’ PCK for NOS. Firstly, teachers’ understanding of NOS is
discussed. Then, the status of science teaching in schools is reviewed.
Thereafter, studies specific to PCK for NOS are examined. The factors
that influence the teaching of science and NOS are also highlighted. The
review reveals that teachers do not understand some important aspects of
NOS and hold the stereotypical image of scientists. The teaching-learning
of science in schools is also not satisfactory and NOS is hardly addressed
in science classrooms. However, the intentions and practices of teachers
for teaching NOS evidently improve with interventions. Based on the
review, the paper concludes that the way science is presented in science
classrooms needs to be revisited. It is suggested that Teacher Education
Programmes must play their role in developing PCK for NOS among
teachers and suitable instruments must be developed for measuring PCK
for NOS.

Authors: JAIN, TARUN KUMAR; CHOUDHARY, SHOBHNA; KUMAR, PAMPOSH
Abstract: In the present era, every citizen in society should have the
opportunity to think, understand and work scientifically. Under the
Fundamental Duties as per Article 51A (H) in the Constitution of
India, it has been said that “it will be the duty of every citizen of India
to develop a scientific temper, humanism and a spirit of inquiry and
reform”. Vaigyanik Drishtikon which is a fortnightly science
newspaper is being published for the last 22 years and is considered
as the first science newspaper in India. It is playing a wide and vivid
role in developing scientific temperament and awareness in society.
In this paper, an attempt has been made to investigate the
effectiveness and role of the science newspaper Vaigyanik Drishtikon in
science communication in Jaipur. The main objective of this study is to
understand, analyze and check the effectiveness of this newspaper. For
this purpose, the authors have used the online survey method to collect
data for their analysis. Since Google form is quite a handy tool for
collecting data, authors have circulated Google forms with a
questionnaire comprising22 questions. A total of 425 responses were
received. Most of the people who participated in the survey responded
that 'Vaigyanik Drishtikon' has developed their scientific understanding to
a great extent and made them aware of the logical, informative and
interesting knowledge of science in simple language.
