Authors: Tsewang, T; Acharya, S; Mishra, A; Kumar, K; Verma, V C; Tiwari, V K; Avantika
Abstract: Cold, arid and high-altitude regions of Ladakh are exceptionally unique in the world and are characterized by extreme temperature variation, thin atmosphere with high UV radiation and less oxygen availability. Cultivation is not viable in Ladakh during the winter due to sub-zero temperatures, resulting in a severe shortage of fresh vegetables and an unbalanced diet. To combat the scarcity of fresh vegetables during the region's harsh winters, farmers have developed low-cost traditional methods for storing vegetables such as potato, cabbage, onion, radish, carrot, and grains such as wheat and barley that are compatible with the region's ecological and socioeconomic conditions. Indigenous knowledge and techniques are extremely valuable in the daily lives of Ladakh natives. In this study every traditional storage method been investigated from Leh district of U.T Ladakh. Hilly areas suffer various climate issues in the present scenario; thus, it is critical to promote the traditional strategy for sustainable agriculture and food security. This study discusses prevalent storage structures of Ladakh region such as Pang-Nga, Sadong, Tsodbang for keeping vegetables like potato, radish, carrot, cabbage, and grains. Charches, Thingches, and khygches method especially designed for winter storage of onions.

Abstract: In recent decades, the medicinal values of traditional landraces have been of great interest and the cultivation is being revamped among the farmers of Tamil Nadu. The present investigation was aimed to analyse the phytonutrients, antioxidants and functional groups among the six traditional land races. Phytochemical analysis revealed that the pigmented traditional landraces of rice possessed more antioxidant properties. The traditional rice varieties, especially Mapillai samba was found to be superior in terms of moisture (11.5±0.16%) and total ash (1.71±0.14%), Kuzhiyadichan in protein (9.65±0.67%) and fat (2.53±0.17%), Iluppaipoo samba in carbohydrate (79.3±1.29) and energy (1525±24.8 kJ). Kuzhiyadichan had highest phosphorous (359±24.7), calcium (46.8±3.23), magnesium (135±9.30), iron (5.70±0.39) and zinc (2.70±0.19) content, whereas copper (0.353±0.02), manganese (0.965±0.06) and potassium (296±23.5) content was higher in Seeraga samba, Kichali samba and Mapillai samba, respectively. The studies revealed that Mapillai samba got the highest total phenols (39.25±0.88 mg), vitamin E (27.76±2.39), anthocyanins (45.2±0.16) and antioxidant activity (764±21.3) followed by Iluppaipoo samba among traditional rice varieties. FTIR analysis revealed the distribution of biochemically different phenols, carbohydrates, hydroxyl and amide groups. Traditional landraces can be used as a source of antioxidants and nutraceuticals. This finding confers new facet in rice breeding to develop a nutraceutical rich rice and to enhance the farmers production in order to meet the demand of food-based medicines.

Authors: Benjongtoshi; Biam, Kamni P; Talang, Hammylliende
Abstract: The present study was conducted to document the various indigenous pest control methods in jhum fields in controlling pests. The data was collected from Mokokchung district taking 6 villages from a sample of 120 farmers practicing jhum cultivation. A total of 10 common adopted ITKs were documented, validated and triangulated. These includes seed preservation (1), crop protection from insect-pest and disease (7), crop protection from birds (1) and sowing time (1). A majority of the farmers (96.67%) perceived the indigenous pest control methods as effective in controlling the pests in the jhum fields. For the farmers in Mokukchung, jhum is a way of life and is to stay considering the socio-cultural institutions embedded with this practice along with the ITKs, their associated beliefs and perceived effectiveness.

Authors: Kale, R B; Gadge, S S; Jayaswall, Kuldip; Gawande, S J; Patole, A O; Singh, Major
Abstract: Traditional indigenous pest and disease management practices followed by Indian farmers were environment friendly, economical and largely non-hazardous to human health. Nevertheless, indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides in today’s modern agriculture has resulted in health hazards, development of insecticide resistance in pests and environmental pollution. Among the traditional practices, the extracts of onion and garlic were effective in indigenous pest management practices. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to document and validate the Indigenous Technical Knowledge (ITK) on ethnobotanical uses of onion and garlic in crop protection practices. The validation of the ITKs was done with 30 experts from the relevant scientific field. Present study revealed that among 36 formulations which were measured on 150 validity score, 30.56% had the validity score above 120, whereas 61.11% scored between 100 to 120. These results showed their wider applicability as pesticide and fungicide to protect various vegetables, cereals, pulses and commercial crops from biological stresses. In vitro standardization of formulation is necessary for effective application on targeted pest. Popularization and commercialization of these ITKs can be a boost for residue free food production.
