Authors: Mohapatra, Debabandya; Mishra, Sabyasachi; Sutar, Namrata
Abstract: Banana serves as an ideal and low cost food source for
developing countries where most of the population rely mostly on

bananas for food. Banana plant parts are useful as
insecticide, antioxidant, colour absorber, in preparation of various functional

foods, wine, alcohol, biogas, cattle feed etc. This
review discusses usefulness of banana fruits, peel, leaves, pseudostem, sheath,

pith and male bud, and prospects of using these materials
in industry.

Authors: Gothwal, R K; Mohan, M K; Ghosh, P
Abstract: This study presents lignin extraction from commercial
black liquor and utilizes it as a partial substitute in phenol formaldehyde

(PF) resin synthesis. Characteristics of modified resin
[non volatile solid content (<44%), alkalinity (<5%), pH (<11.6) and

free formaldehyde (<1%)] were found close to control
PF resin with a variable viscosity (418-781 cP). Shear test properties

showed that phenol (15%) replacement with black liquor
lignin produced comparable physical bond properties and could be

used to formulate a low cost modified PF resin for
plywood panels.

Abstract: Thumba (Citrullus colocyntis) seed oil
can be used for production of biodiesel. A comparative experimental study,
carried

out on a four cylinder, direct injection, water cooled
diesel engine operating on diesel and biodiesel blends (B10, B20 and B30)

of C.
colocyntis and Jatropha curcas, showed that like J. curcas, biodiesel of C. colocyntis can be used as an
alternative fuel with

better performance and lower emissions compared with diesel.

Authors: Ghosh, Sujit Kumar; Sengupta, Surajit; Naskar, Malay
Abstract: This study presents particle boards made from low cost
agro-wastes (date palm leaf and jute stick). Particle boards

from jute stick, date palm leaf and their blends offered
higher sound transmission loss, higher thermal insulation and lower

swelling than plywood. Date palm leaf particle board
showed highest strength, whereas board based on blend (1:1) of date palm

leaf and jute stick gave highest impact strength.
