Water quality variation and nutrient characteristics of Kodungallur-Azhikode Estuary, Kerala, India

Title: Water quality variation and nutrient characteristics of Kodungallur-Azhikode Estuary, Kerala, India
Authors: Jayachandran, P.R.; Nandan, S. Bijoy; Sreedevi, O.K.
Abstract: Present study focussed on the water quality status in relation to various
anthropogenic activities in the Kodungallur-Azhikode Estuary (KAE). Average depth of the estuary
was 3.6 ± 0.2 m with maximum of 4.3 ± 0.4 m in the estuarine mouth. Dissolved oxygen showed an
average of 5.1±1 mg/l in the water column, whereas the highest BOD
value was noticed during monsoon period (3.1 ± 0.8 mg/l) which could
be due to high organic enrichment in the water column. pH displayed
slightly alkaline condition in most of the stations and it varied from 7.2 ± 0.5 in Station 7
to 7.5
± 0.5 in Station 1. Salinity in the estuary
displayed mixo-mesohaline nature with clear
vertical stratification. High river discharge could have resulted in nutrients and
silt loading into the estuary, which makes a highly turbid water column
particularly during the monsoon period, which limits light penetration and
subsequent primary productivity. Turbidity in the water column showed an
average of 20.2 ± 15.8 NTU. Estuary was nitrogen limited during post and pre
monsoon periods. Nitrate-nitrogen content in the estuarine water gave negative
correlation with ammonia.

Tourist satisfaction of the environmental service quality for Tioman Island Marine Park

Title: Tourist satisfaction of the environmental service quality for Tioman Island Marine Park
Authors: Salleh, N.H.M; Othman, R; Sarmidi, T; Jaafar, A.H; Norghani, B.M.N
Abstract: The
purpose of this study is to evaluate the satisfaction level of tourists at the
Tioman Island Marine Park (TIMP) toward the island’s environmental service
quality offered. The measurement of tourist satisfaction is based on the mean
analysis, i.e. the importance mean (expected mean) and the perceived mean
(satisfactory mean). The difference between these mean values shows the gap
value. The research result shows that all tourists (both locals and foreign)
agree on satisfaction toward the TIMP‘s environmental service quality offered.
However, the perceived mean is less than the expected mean. Hence, the gap
analysis as well as the paired t-test finds that the mean values for most of
the environmental service quality are negative. These negative values indicate
a relatively low level of the tourist satisfaction.

Isolation and salt tolerance of halophilic fungi from mangroves and solar salterns in Goa - India

Title: Isolation and salt tolerance of halophilic fungi from mangroves and solar salterns in Goa - India
Authors: Nayak, Shweta S; Gonsalves, Valerie; Nazareth, Sarita W
Abstract: High salt tolerant fungal genera were isolated from
mangroves and solar salterns of Goa. These belonged mainly to the genus Aspergillus; some Penicillium and
a few Eurotium and Hortaea. Most of the isolates were facultative
halophiles, euryhaline in nature, not having an absolute requirement of added
salt for growth. They able to grow even at high salt concentrations and showing
optimal growth only in presence of added salt in the medium. Only one species, A. penicillioides, had an absolute requirement of added salt in the medium
for growth and were termed as obligate halophiles.

Title: Isolation and identification of Vibrio spp. in diseased Channa punctatus from aquaculture fish farm
Authors: Sankar, Ganesh. P; Saravanan, J.; Krishnamurthy, P.; Chandrakala, N.; Rajendran, K
Abstract: During the present study Vibrio spp.
were isolated from infected Channa
punctatus and physico-chemical properties were analyzed from various ponds.
Among the twenty ponds under study, four were contaminated by agricultural wastewater.
The microbial communities in all these ponds appeared to be dominated by V. harveyi, V. parahaemolyticus, V. fischeri and V. cholerae. Out of these C. punctatus was mostly
infected by V. cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus and V. harveyi. It can be transmitted
to all fishes and infect fishes of other ponds.
