Fly Ash Characteristics and its Incorporation Effects on Germination of Maize and Rice

Title: Fly Ash Characteristics and its Incorporation Effects on Germination of Maize and Rice
Authors: Sharma, S K; Kalra, Naveen; Singh, G R
Abstract: Pot culture experiments were conducted during
the summer season in 1996 to evaluate the effect of fly ash addition in soil on
germination and stand establishment of maize (Zea mays L) and rice (Oryza
sativa L). Fly ash was added to soil at 0, 5, 10, 15 or 20 per cent levels,
respectively, for both the crops. The changes in physical and physico-chemical
characteristics of soil, due to fly ash addition were analyzed. Data on
germination time, i e, time taken for 75 per cent germination, and delay
index (DI), a normalized parameter, was analysed and discussed.

Effect of Varying Degree of Debittered and Non-debittered Kinnow Serum Clarified by Different Methods on Quality of Concentrate

Title: Effect of Varying Degree of Debittered and Non-debittered Kinnow Serum Clarified by Different Methods on Quality of Concentrate
Authors: Kaushal, BB Lal; Thakur, NK
Abstract: Effect of varying degree of debittered
and non-debittered kinnow serum clarified by different methods on quality of
concentrate reveals that concentration up to 72 oB is obtained successfully.
The reconstituted juice from concentrate, prepared from enzymatically

clarified serum, is better in quality than
the reconstituted juice prepared from serum clarified by centrifugation . Concentrate
prepared from debittered serum is found to be superior in quality than that
prepared from nondebittered serum which obviously results in better quality juice.

Synthesis and Characterisation of Rare Earth Oxide Based Pigments

Title: Synthesis and Characterisation of Rare Earth Oxide Based Pigments
Authors: Nayak, Rangadhar; Rao, J Rajagopala; Suryanarayana, A
Abstract: An attempt has been made to prepare eco-friendly
pigments, stable at high temperature, based on rare earth metal oxides as replacement
to the presently available inorganic products based on lead, chromium, cadmium,
and mercury which are harmful to environment. As a first step, brilliant red pigments,
ranging from chocolate (ISC 451) to crimson red (ISC 540) were prepared by calcination
of cerium oxalate mixed with praseodymium oxide in varying proportions where
the later acts as the chromophore. Sodium chloride in the precursor works as a modifier
to improve the colour quality. Proper mixing of the ingredients and calcination
at 1100oC are required for the formation of pigments with the
desired characteristics.

Bioaccumulation of Neem limonoids in Pleurotus sajor-caju

Title: Bioaccumulation of Neem limonoids in Pleurotus sajor-caju
Authors: Dolt, K S; Reddy, G V; Shah, M P; Kunjadia, P D; Kothari, I L
Abstract: Pleurotus sajor-caju, an important edible
mushroom, is cultivated on various combinations of neem fruit components for bioaccumulation
of active principles of neem fruit that enrich its medicinal value. Husk and hull
: kernel (1:1) results in the best cultivation with biological efficiency up to
45.75 per cent, which is comparable to its cultivation on banana pseudostem (47.32
per cent), a potent lignocellulosic substrate. To find out the intensity of accumulation
of medicinally important limonoids in the fruiting bodies through HPLC, Azadirachtin,
one of the limonoids, is taken as a reference compound and it is found to he
accumulated in the fruiting bodies of P sajor-caju (4.19 ppm). The presence
of limonoids in these mushrooms makes them a health food.
