    <description>Title: WEB AUTHORING - A 'MUST' SKILL FOR THE INFORMATION PROFESSIONALS AT THE DAWN OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM
Authors: Sreekumar, M G; Bavakutty, M
Abstract: The&#xD;
explosive growth of the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) in recent years&#xD;
has impact on almost every field of human activity while its effect on&#xD;
librarianship is more intensive owing to the information component attached to&#xD;
the professior. For&#xD;
the first time in history, the WWW with its suite of standards and respective technologies&#xD;
made significant strides in the field of information transfer and knowledge&#xD;
management by liberating the basic static nature of the ordinary text, making&#xD;
it dynamic and powerful. The Web has opened up a new school of thought, the&#xD;
hypertext world, with its unquestioned ability in distributed computing on a&#xD;
global scale. The purpose of this paper is to give information professionals a&#xD;
sense of what is unique about the design of Web Pages on the WWW and an indication&#xD;
in general terms of what types of information and materials can be disseminated&#xD;
through this medium. It describes the very need for a Site, its unlimited scope,&#xD;
opportunities and implications and suggests several guidelines for Web site&#xD;
development that will enhance the potential for improved visibility of the&#xD;
library/information centre, its information resources, systems and the array of&#xD;
services, to be seen and utilised by outside world. Also&#xD;
&#xD;
discusses the&#xD;
method of creating an HTML document supplemented with advanced applications of DHTML,&#xD;
XML, VRML, scripting languages, style sheets etc., how the page could be&#xD;
published in the Net and further publicising the page.

    <title>CREATION OF MULTIMEDIA BASED CLINICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM (CIS) IN INDIA FOR VIRAL DISEASES: A PROPOSAL</title>

    <description>Title: CREATION OF MULTIMEDIA BASED CLINICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM (CIS) IN INDIA FOR VIRAL DISEASES: A PROPOSAL
Authors: Singh, Surya Nath
Abstract: Describes a need to create a MM based information system&#xD;
in India&#xD;
to record and retrieve clinical images, associated audio, visual information, textual&#xD;
and numeric data for viral diseases. Advances in information management and&#xD;
technology are necessary for improved communication and research in the health services.&#xD;
A large number of population is affected with viruses and viral diseases and&#xD;
most of these are not very virulent due to various reasons. Due&#xD;
&#xD;
to increasing demand of the variety of the users (national&#xD;
and international) it has become essential to have a clinical information system&#xD;
for viral diseases in India.&#xD;
The aspects covered include poor utilisation of available information and&#xD;
&#xD;
poor communication facilities. A national overview of&#xD;
the effect of important viral diseases in the population have been included.&#xD;
Details of methodology, objective advantages, relationship with other form of&#xD;
databases are also described. Finally, some suggestions have been given to use same&#xD;
tehnique for other&lt;i&gt; &lt;/i&gt;biomedical disciplines.

    <description>Title: PROFILE OF FIRST GRADE COLLEGE LIBRARIES IN KARNATAKA
Authors: Kannappanavar, B U; Mathad, C G
Abstract: A survey of the First Grade College libraries in the State of Karnataka has been carried out. The 720 colleges in the State have been categorised into four kinds, viz. aided, government, constituent and unaided colleges. Various aspects of the 370 libraries in these colleges such as qualifications of librarian, library staff, working hours, classification schemes used, lending, references services, library building facilities, etc., have been profiled. <title>DOCTORAL RESEARCH IN IMTECH : DOCUMENT USE PATTERN</title>

    <description>Title: DOCTORAL RESEARCH IN IMTECH : DOCUMENT USE PATTERN
Authors: Burman, Joginder Singh
Abstract: Reports a study&#xD;
of twenty doctoral dissertations available at the Institute of Microbial&#xD;
Technology (IMTECH) Library, Chandigarh.&#xD;
A total of 4752&#xD;
&#xD;
references were&#xD;
analysed for identifying their bibliographic form, authorship pattern and obsolescence.&#xD;
A rank list of highly cited journals by IMTECH scientists was prepared and&#xD;
further analysed by country of publication and subject dispersion. The findings&#xD;
reveal that nearly 85% citations were from journal literature, half of which had&#xD;
originated from the U.S.A. Journal literature was mostly contributed by&#xD;
collaborative efforts (87%). Highly cited fifteen journals accounted for half of&#xD;
the total journal citations. About 59% of the journal citations belonged to two&#xD;
subject fields, namely, biochemistry and microbiology. Half life of journal literature&#xD;
in biological sciences was found&#xD;
&#xD;
to be 11 years.
