Prevention of Malaria Through Homoeopathy

Title: Prevention of Malaria Through Homoeopathy
Authors: Chatterjee, S N; Das, S
Abstract: In homoeopathy there is no
specific medicine (called remedy) to prevent a disease. But, it provides for
proper functioning of the immune system of a person against diseases through
constitutional or miasmatic treatment. Of course, hygiene, socio-economic
conditions must be congenial to health. The study was limited to the prevention
of malaria and the work is going on in the clinic and a nearby village. Data,
including pathological evidence has been presented. The work was carried out in
three groups of people, <i>viz. </i>non-suffered, suffered, and those treated
under allopathy or homoeopathy systems. The results present showed that, the
prevention of malaria through homoeopathy is full of possibilities.

Studies on Kraft and Kraft-AQ Pulping and Bleaching of Populus Deltoides

Title: Studies on Kraft and Kraft-AQ Pulping and Bleaching of Populus Deltoides
Authors: Rao, Suhail Akhtar; Upadhyaya, J S
Abstract: Kraft pulping process is
the most dominant process used in paper industry. Extending delignification to
a low kappa number is possible with the use of anthraquinone (AQ). The
additions of AQ (0.1 per cent) results in a substantial increase in pulp yield
and strength properties along with substantial decrease in kappa number. The
present study deals with the kraft and kraft AQ pulping of Populus deltoides at
various alkali doses, sulphidity and AQ doses. It has been found that
anthraquinone (AQ) has a beneficial effect on both pulp yield and strength
properties. Further kraft and kraft-AQ pulps were bleached with various conventional
and nonconventional bleaching sequences including CEHH. OCEHED, OCEDED, and
OCEDED to produce bleached pulp with ultra high brightness levels.

Semiconductor Assisted Photodegradation of Textile Dye

Title: Semiconductor Assisted Photodegradation of Textile Dye
Authors: Neppolian, B; Shankar, M V; Murugesan, V
Abstract: The degradation of
commonly used textile dye reactive red 2 in an aqueous solution by means of
photocatalysis using ZnO in the form of slurry is studied. The influence of
initial concentration of the dye, pH of the reaction mixture. Catalyst loading,
the presence of oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, and potassium persulphate on the
degradation rate is observed. When concentration of the dye increases from 60
to 140 ppm, the rate constants vary between 0.055 and 0.019 min-1. The
disappearance of the dye follows approximately pseudo-first order kinetics. For
an irradiation time of 60 min, 86 per cent COD reduction is noted, whereas 100
per cent degradation observed at 300min of irradiation time. The oxidising
agents (oxygen, hydrogen peroxide and potassium persulphate) enhance the
degradation rate of the dye. Carbonate ions present in dye solution inhibit the
degradation rate of the dye. This method suggests the possible use of ZnO photocatalysed
degradation of textile dye present in wastewater.

An Approach Towards the Development of Environmental Quality Index for Evaluation and Categorization of Environmental Impacts

Title: An Approach Towards the Development of Environmental Quality Index for Evaluation and Categorization of Environmental Impacts
Authors: Sundararajan, M; Loveson, V J
Abstract: During systematic
analysis of environmental data, Quality Index (QI) and Quality Matrix (QM)
studies have proved to be much useful techniques. An attempt has been made to
develop an approach for the evaluation of environmental data through index
analysis. Based on the sensitivity function evaluation and derivation of Impact
Index and Quality Index related

to individual parameters
of the various components, Integrated Quality Index (IQI) has been derived.
Further. IQI for various environmental components have been carried over to
matrix analysis to have over all visualization in the form of Environmental
Quality Matrix (EQM). The results can be easily evaluated using defined
Environmental Quality Index Classitication System (EQICS).
