Title: Synthesis of Some New 1-[5'-{(2-benzothiazolylthio)methyl}-1', 3', 4'-thiadiazol-2'-yl]-4-substituted-3-chloro-2-azetidinones : Antimicrobial Agent
Authors: Guru, Niharika; Srivastava, S D
Abstract: A series of
2-arylideneamino-5-[(2-benzothiazolylthio) methyl]-1', 3', 4'-thiadiazoles
(4a-j) have been synthesized via condensation of
2-amino-5-[(benzothiazolylthio)methyl]-1, 3, 4, thiadizole 3 with
various carbonyl compounds. Cycloaddition of chloroacetylchloride to 4
gives 1-[5'-{(2-benzothiazolylthio) methyl}-1', 3', 4'-thiadiazol-2'-yl]
-4-substituted -3-chloro-2-azetidinones (5a-j) have been synthesized as the
final products. All the products have been screened for their antifungal and
antibacterial activity against some selected pathogens and found to exhibit
mild to pronounce activity.

Domestic Refrigerators: Field Studies and Energy Efficiency Improvement

Title: Domestic Refrigerators: Field Studies and Energy Efficiency Improvement
Authors: Bhatt, M Siddhartha
Abstract: The paper reports the studies on
evaluation of energy indices of domestic refrigerators of 165 L capacity in India. The
specific energy consumption varies between 3.23 and 4.19 kWh/y/L for single
door manual defrost units and between 3.84 and 4.78 kWh/y/L for double door
auto defrost units. The major technical areas in a modernization programme are
the use of alternatives to HCFC 22, the introduction of more efficient controls
and better insulation. Though energy efficient and eco-friendly domestic
refrigerators are cost-effective, forces driving technology upgradation such as
energy labeling, minimum efficiency standards and incentives to industries are
essential to bring about renovation in the domestic refrigerator technology.

Title: Inferential Model for pH Control
Authors: Chaudhuri, Uttam Ray; Chaudhuri, Utpal Ray
Abstract: An inferential model pH control strategy
based on fundamental relations for pH neutralization has been developed. The
inferential model was simulated to analyze performance of the pH control scheme
and then compared with an experimental acidbase

neutralization system.

Flyash Incorporation Effect on Soil Health and Yield of Maize and Rice

Title: Flyash Incorporation Effect on Soil Health and Yield of Maize and Rice
Authors: Sharma, S K; Kalra, Naveen; Singh, G R
Abstract: Field experiments were conducted in
villages around National Capital Power Project (NCPP), Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, India
during 1995 to evaluate flyash incorporation effects on soil health and growth
and yield of maize (Zea mays L.) and rice (Oryza sativa
L.). Flyash application levels (up to 10t/ha) were decided on the
basis of an ash/dust fall range of 5 to 12 t/ha/y in the villages adjoining
thermal power station. The grain yield of maize increased in flyash added
plots, whereas rice yield was similar to flyash treated plots. Flyash added
plots had marginally higher uptake of Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Cd, but values were
insignificant. Flyash application in soil resulted in lower bulk density. Flyash
addition also reduced hydraulic conductivity and improved moisture retention at
field capacity and permanent wilting point. These changes in the soil
characteristics might have been due to modifications in the macro- and
micro-pore size distribution which also contributed to increased yield of maize
in light and medium textured soils.
