Abstract: An
experiment was conducted at Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya,
Chitrakoot, Satna, Madhya Pradesh in Rabi season of the years 2009-10. The
experiment containing 12 treatments mechanical i.e. hand weeding at 25 and 50
DAS (Days After Sowing) and chemical i.e. pre emergence application of Alachlor
@ 2 kg a.i./ha, Pendimethalin @ 1 kg a.i./ha, Oxyfluorfen @ 0.2 kg a.i./ha, and
post emergence application of Imazethapyr @ 100 g a.i./ha at 30 DAS and in
combination with Alachlor @ 1.5 kg a.i./ha as Pre-E + 1 HW 25 DAS,
Pendimethalin @ 0.75 kg a.i./ha /ha Pre-E + 1 HW 25 DAS, Oxyfluorfen @ 0.15 kg
a.i./ha Pre-E + 1 HW 25 DAS, Imazethapyr @ 75 g a.i./ha Post-E 30 DAS + 1 HW 50
DAS. These treatments were laid out in randomized block design. Growth
parameters were recorded at successive crop
growth stages, yield and yield contributing character recorded
at maturity and economics of study was done after harvest.
The weed population at 60 DAS was found to be
minimum in Pendimethalin @ 0.75 kg/ha + 1 hand weeding at
25 DAS treatment and this treatments has been found suitable
for higher seed production and economically viable in
rain fed chickpea.

Title: Evaluation of antimicrobial activity of chemical constituents of Achyranthes aspera L. roots against human pathogens
Authors: Owk, Aniel Kumar; Mortha, Krishna Rao; Lagudu, Mutyala Naidu
Abstract: Antimicrobial activity of roots of Achyranthes aspera L.
(Family-Amaranthaceae) was studied against seven pathogenic bacterial and three
fungal strains by agar well diffusion method. Antimicrobial activity was
recorded for hexane, chloroform, methanol, ethanol and aqueous extracts.
Alcohol (ethanol and methanol) extracts exhibited higher degree of
antimicrobial activity compared to aqueous, chloroform and hexane extracts. Klebsiella pneumoniae turned out to be
the most susceptible bacterium to the crude chemical constituents of roots
using the standard drugs, Tetracycline and Clotrimazole. Minimum inhibition
concentration values of chloroform, methanol, ethanol and aqueous extracts were
determined by the agar dilution method ranged between 62.5 and 1000 µg. The
study suggests that the root extracts possess bioactive compounds with
antimicrobial activity against the tested bacteria and fungi revealing a
significant scope to develop a novel broad spectrum antimicrobial drug
formulation from A. aspera.

" times="" new="" roman";mso-fareast-font-family:"times="" roman";mso-bidi-font-family:="" mangal;mso-ansi-language:en-gb;mso-fareast-language:en-us;mso-bidi-language:="" hi"="" lang="EN-GB">The present study was aimed to collect information on medicinal plants used
by the people of Koont village around University research farm and its
surrounding areas located on Chakwal road, Punjab, Pakistan. For this purpose,
field trips were arranged and the study area was surveyed during August 2008 to
July 2009 to collect traditional use of plants by using open-ended and
structured questionnaires. Forty three species belonging to 35 genera and 21
families have been identified which are being used by the natives for treating
27 different ailments. Joint pains and injuries were more prevalent complaints
in the area, hence most of the species (9.09 %) were utilized for the same, followed
by wounds, fever, toothache, as tonic (6.82 % each), boils, skin diseases,
constipation, piles, jaundice and cough (4.55 % each). Leaves were the most
commonly utilized part (27.03 %) for preparing indigenous recipes followed by
the whole plant (16.22 %), roots, seeds, fruits (10.81 % each) and latex, gums
(exudates) (8.11 % each). Fourteen plant species possessed novel use in
addition to previous knowledge. Based on this study, phytochemical and
pharmacological screening is suggested for the novel use in order to validate
their authenticity.

Effect of recycled yeast inoculum on fermentation and quality of red wine produced from Punjab purple (Syn H516) grapes

Title: Effect of recycled yeast inoculum on fermentation and quality of red wine produced from Punjab purple (Syn H516) grapes
Authors: Kaur, Maninderjeet; Kocher, G S
Abstract: Fresh and recycled yeast
(Saccharomyces cerevisiae MTCC 11815)
inoculums were compared for fermentation of Punjab purple (Syn H516) grapes
juice for preparation of red wine. An inoculum size of 10% of recycled yeast
was optimized for an ethanol production of 9.5% (v/v) at a fermentation
efficiency of 74.53% with stored juice and the same was consistent for up to
two recycling lots. The prepared wine was allowed to sediment for 7 days at 4oC,
siphoned and filtered and then matured for 6 months in amber colored bottles. A
significant decrease in ethanol, total phenols and yeast count was observed in
wines prepared from both fresh and recycled yeast inoculum during storage. Both
the type of wines scored 65.9±8.01 and 63.3±8.52 on sensory analysis for fresh
and recycled inoculum, respectively and were significantly better than a
commercial red wine. The red wines were also found to be rich in 10 amino
acids.
