of methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto mulberry silk fibre has been done in limited
aqueous medium using cerrous ammonium sulphate (Ce+3)/potassium
persulphate (K2S2Og) as the redox initiator
and compared with the graft copolymerization done in dark under the same
conditions. Grafting, total conversion, grafting efficiency and pH dependency
of the system have been studied and analysed. The mechanism of polymerisation
and graft copolymer formation are discussed. FTIR spectra and SEM studies show
the evidence of grafting on the fibre backbone.</span>

were degummed for different durations using the culture of <i>Aspergillus
flavus</i> and then bleached with different concentrations of bleaching powder
solution. It has been observed that the microbial treatments for 5 and 7 days
remove 58.78% and 73.12% gum respectively without deterioration in fibre
qualities. For the same concentration of bleaching powder solution and
treatment time, the microbial treatment for 5 days is the best when the
physical properties like tensile strength are considered. The fungal treatment
for 7 days is suggested for better brightness and fibre fineness.</span>

Title: Effect of pretreatment with solvents and solvent mixtures on the structure/properties and dye uniformity of textured polyester yarn
Authors: Chattopadhyay, D P; Singh, R K; Patra, T N; Samanta, A K
Abstract: <span style="font-size:11.0pt;line-height:115%;
font-family:" calibri","sans-serif";mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-fareast-font-family:="" "times="" new="" roman";mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast;mso-hansi-theme-font:="" minor-latin;mso-bidi-font-family:"times="" roman";mso-ansi-language:en-us;="" mso-fareast-language:en-us;mso-bidi-language:ar-sa"="">Textured polyester
multifilament yarn was subjected to swelling in single and mixed solvents (with
varying ratio) at room temperature for different durations. The changes in the
structure and properties of the yarn were investigated by measuring
birefringence, crystallinity, critical dissolution time, shrinkage on
treatment, % change in bulk, residual shrinkage, crimp rigidity, dye uptake and
dye uniformity. Among the four single solvents used, dimethyl formamide (DMF)
and methylene chloride showed better balance of the above properties and dye
uniformity. Use of a mixture of tetrachloroethane and DMF in the ratio of 1:3
gave dye uptake at par or slightly better than that given by the corresponding
single solvent but showed more dye uniformity.</span>
