Title: Performance of Yarns and Blankets from Chemically Treated Jute-Polypropylene Blends Authors: Gupta, N P; Bhattacharya, G K Abstract: Chemically crimped jute fibre in blend with polypropylene staple was processed successfully on a woollen spinning system. The strength of jute-polypropylene blend yarn was higher than that of all-wool yarn but the breaking extension of the former was lower than that of the latter. Raw jute-polypropylene blends could be processed on a woollen system and yarn properties improved significantly on treatment with a strong caustic solution. Blankets made from 60/40 chemically treated jute polypropylene blend yarn were comparable to all-wool blankets in many respects. Page(s): 160-163

Title: Comparison of the Characteristics of Open-end and Ring Yarns and Fabrics of Different Structures Authors: Bhargava, G S; Mehta, P K; Gulati, R K Abstract: As the plying of yarn improves not only the yarn quality but also the fabric quality, a study has been made to compare the extent of improvement resulting from plying in open-end yarn ring yarn and in fabrics prepared with these yarns as weft by keeping the warp and weave identical. Increase in twist and number of plies in open-end yarn produced a plied yarn comparable to ring yarn. However the use or open-end yarn demands a judicious selection or yarn count number or plies In the final yarn, twist levels of single- and plied-stage yarn, loom sett and the type of weave for producing fabrics with optimum performance. Yarns of the same resultant count, but of seven different structures-(i) single Z-twisted, (ii) & (iii) 2-ply and 3-ply single Z and folded Z-twisted, (iv) & (v) 2-ply and 3-ply single Z and folded S-twisted, and (vi) & (vii) 2-ply and 3-ply without folding twist-were used. The use of longer fibres in the preparation of yarn and latter's use in the weft direction in fabric production result in a stronger, more extensible, less flexible and more abrasion-resistant fabric.
