Title: Monitoring the coastal land use land cover changes (LULCC) of Kuwait from spaceborne LANDSAT sensors
Authors: Baby, S
Abstract: Present study focuses on spatial and temporal evolutionary changes in coastal land use-land cover (LULC) in Kuwait. In the study here data acquired from LANDSAT sensor is used for LULC assessment and monitoring which involves quantitative characterization of the patterns of land use and land cover change (LULCC) for three epochs – 1972-1990; 1990-2007 and 2007-2012. The study integrates the techniques of remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS).

Temporal and spatial variability of fin fish assemblage structure in relation to their environmental parameters in Pichavaram mangrove ecosystem, India

Title: Temporal and spatial variability of fin fish assemblage structure in relation to their environmental parameters in Pichavaram mangrove ecosystem, India
Authors: Mahesh, R.; Saravanakumar, A.
Abstract: The effect of seasonal variation and physico-chemical parameters in the fin fish assemblage structure was studied in Coleroon-Pichavaram-Vellar Mangrove Ecosystem (CPVME) from July 2010 to June 2011. Physico-chemical parameters such as, water temperature, salinity, total dissolved solids (TDS), dissolved oxygen (DO) and trace elements such as calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) reflected seasonal tendency where, salinity is inversely correlated with rain fall. Totally, 45 species were identified; belonging to 38 genera, 29 families. Among these, Mugilidae (25.74 %) was the predominant family, followed by Leiognathidae (22.73 %), Terapontidae (16.15 %), Gobiidae (9.21 %) and Siganidae (6.79 %). In which, Leiognathus equulus (15.79 %) and Liza parsia (14.02 %) were dominant species in terms of density and frequency throughout the study period. The fish abundance was observed to be highest during post-monsoon and was significantly correlated with species richness and diversity. Canonical Correspondence Analysis indicated that, salinity and depth are the vital factors in shaping the fish assemblage structure in CPVME.

Abstract: Two goby fishes Cryptocentrus cyanotaenia Bleeker, 1853 and Istigobius diadema Steindachner 1877 were collected from the Tuticorin and Mandapam coastal waters of Tamilnadu, India. C. cyanotaenia is well distinguished by the presence of grey color body with 9 narrow white bars; blue lines and spots with markings on the head and snout; yellow margins of dorsal, anal and caudal fins. I. diadema is easily recognized by bold black line on the posterior portion of the eye; head region with a dark reddish tinge; dorsal, anal and caudal fins with dark spots.
