Hydrodynamic responses on mangrove sediments of Kannur region, southwest coast of India

Title: Hydrodynamic responses on mangrove sediments of Kannur region, southwest coast of India
Authors: Badarudeen, A; Padmalal, D; Sajan, K
Abstract: The surface and core sediments of Kannur mangroves have been examined for grain size characteristics and statistical parameters. The content of sand and mud remains almost constant in landward, intermediate and shallow water profiles. The core KC2, collected from the southern part of the study area shows the highest average of sand (68%). The mean size varies between 1.83 ɸ and 5.56 ɸ in surface sediments and between 2.3 ɸ, and 5.6 ɸ in core sediments. The sediments are generally poorly to very poorly sorted, coarse to very fine skewed and lepto to very platy kurtic in nature. These textural indices and the observed scattering of CM-plots reflect a complex hydrodynamic regime prevailing in different parts of the Kannur mangroves.

Textural behaviour of innershelf sediments off Mangalore, west coast of India

Title: Textural behaviour of innershelf sediments off Mangalore, west coast of India
Authors: Sriram; Murthy, T R Sreedhara; Reghunath, Rajesh; Maddodi, B S; Raghavan, B R
Abstract: Modern sediments are constrained to a water depth of 41m and mixed sediments at water depths more than 41m in Arabian Sea off Mangalore. Mixed sediments are inferred to represent cross shelf transportation of modern silt+clay to the relict sand zone. Sedimentological analysis also indicates a longer period of shelf environment earlier to the transgression/regression cycles of the Holocene-Pleistocene epochs. Down core variation of different sedimentological parameters is more prominent in the outer-innershelf core.

Title: Trace metals (Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu) in sediments from the Gulf of Mannar region, southeast coast of India
Authors: Kumaresan, S; Kumar, N V Vinith; Balasubramanian, T; Subramanian, A N
Abstract: The distribution of trace metals (Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu) in the reef sediments and seagrass sediments of islands Manalli and Hare in the Gulf of Mannar region has been monitored for a period of one year. Attempt has also been made to relate the sediment particle size with the concentrations of metals. The determined metal concentrations were in the following order : Fe>Mn>Zn>Cu. The differences between seagrass bed and coral reef bed were statistically determined in each island using ANOVA.

Distribution of Na and K in the sediments of Veli, Kochi and Kannur mangroves, Kerala

Title: Distribution of Na and K in the sediments of Veli, Kochi and Kannur mangroves, Kerala
Authors: Badarudeen, A; Sakkir, S; Sajan, K
Abstract: The surface sediments of Veli consists an average concentration of 2.75% Na and 1.02% K. The content of Na and K in the surface (Na=2.14%; K=1.48%) and core sediments of Kochi (Cochin) mangroves are almost similar. Kannur mangroves exhibit an average of 2.43% Na and 5.36% of K. The mean enrichment of Na and K in the sediment cores KC1, KC2 and KC3 are 2.93% and 1.8%, 2% and 4.65%, 2.13% and 1.23%, respectively. The enrichment of K over Na in Kannur mangroves could be either due to the contribution from the mangrove vegetative debris or fixation of these elements in clay minerals of the sediment substratum.
