Title: Age and growth of the carangid Alepes para (Class: Osteichthyes) from Mangalore coast, west coast of India
Authors: Kalita, B; Jayabalan, N
Abstract: Age and growth of the carangid Alepes para (Cuvier) from Mangalore coast were studied. While the fish grows to 83-84mm during first year, it attains 131 and 143 mm as the second and third year growth von Bertalanffy growth equation derived for A. para was Lt = 171.1741 [1-e(-0.1832(t+0.1590))]. The fishery of A. para is mainly supported by the second year class of fish.

Effect of hydrogen sulphide on the substratum selectivity of shrimp Penaeus indicus (Crustacea/Decapoda)

Title: Effect of hydrogen sulphide on the substratum selectivity of shrimp Penaeus indicus (Crustacea/Decapoda)
Authors: Gopakumar, G.; Kuttyamma, V. J.
Abstract: The nature of the substratum is a major factor controlling the distribution of shrimps. Shrimps being benthic spend part of their life embedded in the soil. Any change in the substratum affects the distribution and feed acception which in turn affect their growth and survival. The substratum preference of two size groups (40-45mm and 85-90mm) of Penaeus indicus was studied. Three different substrates viz. clean washed sea sand, mixture df sea sand and powdered clay (3:1) and black hydrogen sulphide containing soil taken from sulphide rich area of shrimp culture ponds were used for the study. Feed acceptance and magnitude of distribution of p. indicus in these substrates were noted. It was observed that both size groups of shrimps showed preference to sandy clay substrates and avoid the substrate with sulphide. While feed acceptance was found significantly low in the hydrogen sulfide containing soil, there was no much difference in the acceptance of feed in other two substrates.

Title: Depletion of energy reserves during ovarian development in Etroplus maculates (Bloch)
Authors: Veena, K B; Radhakrishnan, C K; Chacko, J
Abstract: The ovarian maturation in Etroplus maculatus (Bloch), an estuarine teleost brought about well marked changes in the various energy reserves. Protein from the muscle and liver was used up most. Lipid concentrations got depleted considerably during advanced stages of maturity. Although glycogen seemed to have no part to play during reproduction, an increased concentration of lactic acid indicated that a considerable quantity of glycogen was definitely used up during maturation.

Heavy metals in fishes from coastal waters of Cochin, southwest coast of India

Title: Heavy metals in fishes from coastal waters of Cochin, southwest coast of India
Authors: Nair, Maheswari; Balachandran, K K; Sankaranarayanan, V N; Joseph, Thresiamma
Abstract: The concentration levels of copper, zinc, manganese and iron have been determined in marine fishes from Cochin area which is one of the major fishing zones along the west coast of India. The concentration of heavy metals varied from species to species. Copper, Zn, Fe and Mn showed increased levels in the gills and alimentary canal compared to the muscle. Difference in heavy metal concentration in various species studied is attributed to the varying feeding habits. The observed levels were below the toxic limit.
