Title: Low - latitude Bay Disturbance on 21 Mar. 1981
Authors: Sastri, N S
Abstract: Records of an event around Indian midnight, comprising two positive bays followed by a depression in the horizontal component separating the third bay, are presented. The bays appear to be related to the strengthening of aurora reported in these intervals. Their onset is not always clear on the declination records.

Influence of Solar Activity on Mental Care Hospital Admissions

Title: Influence of Solar Activity on Mental Care Hospital Admissions
Authors: Rao, M Srirama; Nirmala, A; Ahmed, M Iqhbal
Abstract: Monthly data of the total number of mental patients admitted during the period 1960-78 into the Mental Care Hospital at Waltair were collected and categorized into schizophrenia, mania and epileptic cases. Correlations of these various cases with sunspot numbers (<i>R</i>2)and geomagnetic activity, ∑<i>Kp</i>, were carried out. The correlation coefficients indicate that the total number of cases and the mania cases were influenced by sunspot activity, schizophrenia cases were not influenced by sunspot or geomagnetic activity, while epileptic cases were influenced both by sunspot and geomagnetic activity.

Sensitive Pressure Gauge Using Silicon Surface Barrier Detector

Title: Sensitive Pressure Gauge Using Silicon Surface Barrier Detector
Authors: Verma, S D; Sinha, Vijaya
Abstract: A silicon surface barrier detector is designed and fabricated to observe IX-particles from various radioactive sources. The energy spectrum of monoenergetic α–particles from 2&1 Am source using this detector is obtained with the help of a 256 channel microprocessor controlled pulse height analyzer (MCA). A shift in the peak of the energy spectrum towards the lower channel is observed if the pressure between the source and the detector is increased. This can be used to observe the pressure. A differential counting method is described to determine the pressure accurately. The application of this device in a balloon flight experiment is discussed.

Acoustic Sounder Study of Sea Breeze in Southwest Monsoon Season

Title: Acoustic Sounder Study of Sea Breeze in Southwest Monsoon Season
Authors: Rao, M Purnachandra; Kumar, A Raghu; Murthy, J S R; Rao, A S Mohana; Rao, C Poornachandra
Abstract: Acoustic sounder echo patterns obtained at Visakhapatnam during periods of sea breeze in the month of July 1980 (monsoon month) are presented and discussed in the light of the prevailing weather conditions and surface meteorological data obtained from the antenna site. Sea breeze occurrence in July is occasional. unlike daily occurrence in summer, because of the dominant gradient flow from west to east due to the prevailing southwest monsoon. A large increase in the intensity and height of backscattered echoes was observed at the onset of sea breeze indicating the thermally inhomogeneous and turbulent nature of the air just behind the moving sea breeze front. The increase in the depth of the sea breeze as shown by the acoustic records was mirrored in hygrograrns.
