<description>Title: Food and feeding habits of the ponyfish Leiognathus splendens (Pisces, Leiognathidae) from Porto Novo coast
Authors: Jayabalan, N
Abstract: Smaller L. splendens prefer copepods, diatoms and veligers, while larger individuals feed mainly on copepods, other crustaceans (Lucifer, cirripede nauplii, megalopa of crab, adult crab, Acetes, prawn mysis and crustacean remains), foraminiferans, adult polychaetes, amphipods and detritus. Active feeding is evident only during May and June. Active, moderate and poor feeding at various stages of maturity of the fish indicates that feeding intensity has no relation with maturity cycle.

<title>Age and growth of the Ponyfish secutor insidiator along Porto Novo coast</title>

<description>Title: Age and growth of the Ponyfish secutor insidiator along Porto Novo coast
Authors: Jayabalan, N
Abstract: Length-frequency distribution of the fish in the commercial catches revealed that S. insidiator (Bloch) grows to a total length (TL) of 78 mm at the end of 12 months and 108 mm at the end of 20 months of its life. Probability plot technique indicated 73 mm and 97 mm growth in fish at the end of 1st and 2nd y respectively. Von Bertalanffy growth equation fitted indicated 120 mm as the asymptotic length (L-alpha) which is almost close to the maximum size of the fish actually recorded.

<title>Application of satellite derived sea-surface temperature for estimation of fish catch : A pilot study</title>

<description>Title: Application of satellite derived sea-surface temperature for estimation of fish catch : A pilot study
Authors: Nath, A Narendra; Rao, M V; Reddy, S Ratna; Das, N K; Baral, N C
Abstract: Sea surface temperatures have been obtained from NOAA-MCSST charts of 1986 and 1987 using interpolation method for Orissa coast, to evaluate their association with marine fish catch, as obtained from the landing stations in the form of monthly means. The fish catch increases with the decrease of temperatures. On an average 50% of variations in the fish catch can be explained with the help of variations in temperatures in this region.

<title>Population selection-strategies in the wedge clam, Donax-incarnatus (Gmelin) from Panambur beach, Mangalore</title>

<description>Title: Population selection-strategies in the wedge clam, Donax-incarnatus (Gmelin) from Panambur beach, Mangalore
Authors: Thippeswamy, S; Joseph, M Mohan
Abstract: Correlates of r- and K-selection strategies were examined in an intertidal population of D. incarnatus. Settlement extended from November to May. Zero year class dominated the population. Instantaneous total mortality ranged from 0.1824 (January 1985) to 0.3963 (March 1984). Growth rate showed variability, being faster (3.22 mm per month) during the first 6 months than during the rest of the year (1.77 to 0.3 mm per month). L(max) was 26.1 mm. The von Bertalanffy equation for length was L(t) = 30.94[1-e-0.1612(t + 0.04)]. A life table of a cohort of 1000 individuals was prepared. The life span was &lt; 15 months. Survivorship curve belonged to type Ia of Deevey [Quart Rev Biol, 22(1947)283]. Selection attributes indicated that this species is a K-strategist in this study area.
