Effect of seedling density and growth regulators on field grown red alga Gelidiella acerosa

Title: Effect of seedling density and growth regulators on field grown red alga Gelidiella acerosa
Authors: Subbaramaiah, K; Thomas, P C
Abstract: Planting was done to study the effect of (i) seeding biomass and (ii) pretreatment with growth regulators (ascorbic acid, kinetin and naphthalene acetic acid at 100 mg.l -1 conc.) on the growth, yield of the alga, and the agar content and physical properties (gel strength, melting and gelling temperatures). Two plantings and 2 harvests in December and in June were done over 3 y (1980 to 1982). Optimum biomass for growth in large plantations could be 300 g.m-2. At this planting density, treatment with ascorbic acid and kinetin increased growth rate and crop yield to get and annual yield biomass of 650 g.m-2.

Title: Occurrence of Noctiluca bloom in Kalpakkam coastal waters, east coast of India
Authors: Sargunam, C A; Rao, V N R; Nair, K V K
Abstract: An intense bloom of Noctiluca scintillans (Macartney) was observed along the coast of Kalpakkam between 11 and 17 October 1988. The coastal waters appeared dense green. Estimations of Noctiluca population, chlorophyll a,b,c, and total carotenoid and physicochemical characteristics were carried out during the bloom period. Species composition of diatoms were assessed before, after, and during the peak bloom period. Diatoms were absent in phytoplankton samples during the peak period of the bloom.

Distribution of nutrients in Chilka lake, east coast of India

Title: Distribution of nutrients in Chilka lake, east coast of India
Authors: Panda, D; Tripathy, S K; Patnaik, D K; Choudhury, S B; Gouda, R; Panigraphy, R C
Abstract: Nutrients (NO-N, PO-P and SiO-Si), temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and transparency were studied during 11-14 November 1988 in the Chilka lake. Marked spatial variations were observed with respect to almost all parameters determined. Silicate showed strong inverse relationship (P0.01) with salinity both at surface and bottom layers. The relationship of phosphate and nitrate with salinity, however, depicted variable pictures. Pronounced interzonal differences for transparency, salinity and silicate were observed compared to other parameters. Surface and bottom differences were less with respect to salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen and phosphate.

Concentration of humic acids in mangrove habitat of Karwar, west coast of India

Title: Concentration of humic acids in mangrove habitat of Karwar, west coast of India
Authors: Shanmukhappa, H; Neelakantan, Kusuma
Abstract: Concentration of humic acids was estimated in mangrove habitat (water and sediment) of Karwar for 1 y (May 1987 to April 1988). Particulate humic acid concentration was generally more than dissolved humic acid (DHA) concentration. All forms of humic acids showed monthly variation. A significant negative relationship was observed between DHA and salinity (r= - 0.93).
