<title>Apparent relationship between Thermal Regime in Antarctic waters and Indian Summer Monsoon</title>

<description>Title: Apparent relationship between Thermal Regime in Antarctic waters and Indian Summer Monsoon
Authors: Menon, H B; Babu, V Ramesh; Sastry, J S
Abstract: Austral winter seasonal and intra-seasonal variabilities of Sub-Tropical Convergence and Antarctic Polar Front are examined using sea surface temperature patterns published in GOSSTCOMP (Global Operational Sea Surface Temperature Computations) charts for the Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean during 2 contrasting years (1977 and 1979) of summer monsoon over India. The results suggest an apparent relationship between the thermal regimes in the Antarctic waters of the Indian Ocean sector and the summer monsoon activity over India, through a link of the Mascarene High southern sub-tropical high pressure zone.

    <title>Reference Depth for Geostrophic Computation - A New Method</title>

<description>Title: Reference Depth for Geostrophic Computation - A New Method
Authors: Varkey, M J; Sastry, J S
Abstract: Various methods are available for the determination of reference depth for geostrophic computation. A new method based on the vertical profiles of mean and variance of the differences of mean specific volume anomaly (delta x 10) for different layers of the water column for various pairs of stations is presented. The results agree well with published information for a region in the Indian Ocean.

<title>Analysis of Nearshore Profiles Off Paradip Port, East Coast of India</title>
    <link>http://nopr.niscpr.res.in/handle/123456789/38509</link>
<description>Title: Analysis of Nearshore Profiles Off Paradip Port, East Coast of India
Authors: Sarma, K G S; Sundar, V
Abstract: Sediment movement in the nearshore zone off Paradip has been studied in relation to sediment supply, harbour siltation and shore erosion. Estimates of erosion and deposition have been made at different cross sections along the coastline with the nearshore profiles. The effectiveness of the sand pumping and hoppering into the offshore area in safeguarding the beaches has been discussed. The nearshore profile data presented in this paper indicate that the active zone for initiation of sand movement by waves and bottom currents is even beyond 14 m depth. It has been-well supported by the rapid advance and retreat of the bottom contours starting from 3 to 14 m depths off Paradip.

<title>Bio-Optical Studies in the Bay of Bengal Waters Off Madras Coast, India</title>
    <link>http://nopr.niscpr.res.in/handle/123456789/38508</link>
<description>Title: Bio-Optical Studies in the Bay of Bengal Waters Off Madras Coast, India
Authors: Mishra, A K; Prasad, K S; Subramanian, V; Bhattacharya, A
Abstract: Bio-optical characteristics like reflectance, absorbance and backscattering of selected stations in the Bay of Bengal are studied. An attempt is made to interpret these results with reference to the chlorophyll concentrations. An existing pigment index developed for Indian waters is tested for chlorophyll retrieval and the mode best suited for low chlorophyll waters is suggested.
