Vibrio vulnificus in clams in Mangalore waters, west coast of India

Title: Vibrio vulnificus in clams in Mangalore waters, west coast of India
Authors: Karunasagar, I; Mathew, S; Karunasagar, I
Abstract: V. vulnificus was isolated from fish and clam samples and characterised. Representative strains were found to be highly lethal to mice and also showed hemolytic activity. This suggests that virulent strains of V. vulnificus are present in fish and clams (seafood) harvested around Mangalore.

Title: Isolation of actinomycetes from marine sediments off Visakhapatnam, east coast of India
Authors: Ellaiah, P; Reddy, A P C
Abstract: Actinomycetes (140) were isolated from sediment samples and identified to generic level. The genera encountered were Streptomyces, Micromonospora, Nocardia, Streptosporangium, Micropolyspora and Streptoverticillium. Of the total isolates 18% exhibited antimicrobial activity. The salt tolerance of the isolates was also tested.

Title: A device for continuous microscopic observations of aquatic microorganisms
Authors: Kumar, S Raghu
Abstract: The device consists of a sealed microscopic mount provided with an inlet for liquid medium and an outlet, permitting continuous flow of the liquid. It permits observation of development of marine microorganisms such as thraustochytrids for 3 d.

Characteristics of neritic waters along the west coast of India with respect to upwelling, dissolved oxygen and zooplankton biomass

Title: Characteristics of neritic waters along the west coast of India with respect to upwelling, dissolved oxygen and zooplankton biomass
Authors: Murty, A V S
Abstract: Assuming temperature of the water layer at 50 m depth along the shore as an inverse index of upwelling, zooplankton biomass of the pelagic waters off the west coast of India in relation to upwelling intensity is studied. Productive value of upwelling, is reflected in the abundance of biomass of the total zooplankton. At much higher intensity of upwelling, the waters are very much depleted with respect to dissolved oxygen. Temporal and spatial lag of occurrence of zooplankton with upwelling is noticed in the analysis. Upwelling and plankton production take place earlier in the southern part of the coastline than in the northern.
