Title: Biology of the hunter shrimp Exhippolysmata ensirostris (Kemp) from Maharashtra Coast
Authors: Kagwade, P V
Abstract: E. ensirostris, one of the components of non-penaeid prawns in Maharashtra, India, attains the size of 6 mm in the 1st year and 90 mm in the 2nd year. The testicular part of ovotestis does not get atrophied in higher lengths and the species functions as a regular hermaphrodite throughout. The absolute crop for an individual is estimated to be generally above 5,000 in number. An individual spawns once continuously in a number of batches. Spawning activity appears to reach its height in the size 66-80 mm.

Macrobenthos and sediment characteristics of Mulki Estuary, West Coast of India

Title: Macrobenthos and sediment characteristics of Mulki Estuary, West Coast of India
Authors: Ramachandra, U; Gupta, T R C; Katti, R J
Abstract: Bivalves and polychaetes contributed to the bulk of the benthic fauna in the Mulki Estuary, Karnataka, India, Meretrix casta, Paphia malabarica and Modiolus undulatus were generally abundant. While adults dominated the catches during premonsoon, juveniles were abundant during postmonsoon season. Among the polychaetes, Dendronereis arborifera and Sabellaria cementarium were dominant; December to January being favourable. Bivalves dominated at stations having sediment with medium, fine and very fine fractions. S. cementarium was more in sandy stretches, while D. arborifera favoured regions of fine sand admixed with silt and clay.

Seasonal variation of Vibrio parahaemolyticus (Sakazaki et al.) in Cochin Backwaters

Title: Seasonal variation of Vibrio parahaemolyticus (Sakazaki et al.) in Cochin Backwaters
Authors: Pradeep, R; Lakshmanaperumalsamy, P
Abstract: Seasonal study on the occurrence and distribution of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in water, sediment and plankton at 3 stations in Cochin Backwaters was made. At st 1, least disturbed by sewage outfall, salinity was found to be the major limiting factor for the distribution of V. parahaemolyticus. Seawater helped the survival of V. parahaemolyticus during the monsoon season at st 2. At st 3, highly disturbed by wastes from fishery industries, fluctuation of V. parahaemolyticus population was maximum. Monsoon rains played indirectly a major role on the distribution of V. parahaemolyticus in association with plankton through plankton blooms. The study shows that V. parahaemolyticus occurs throughout the year in Cochin Backwaters system.

Biomass relations between phytoplankton and zooplankton in Goa waters

Title: Biomass relations between phytoplankton and zooplankton in Goa waters
Authors: Pant, A; Matondkar, S G P; Goswami, S C
Abstract: Biomass of phytoplankton and zooplankton, measured as particulate oxidizable carbon, shows that at shallowest stations (5 m) there is large excess of phytoplankton organic carbon over zooplankton carbon in all the samples. There is no significant relationship between chl a and either glycollic acid or dissolved carbohydrates in these samples.
