Title: Gut microflora of some edible crabs from Porto Novo Coast
Authors: Venkateswaran, K; Sethuramalingam, S; Natarajan, R
Abstract: Gut microflora of 5 commercially important crabs, viz. Charybdis cruciata (Herbst), Podophthalmus vigil (Fabricius) (marine), Scylla serrata (Forskal), Portumus pelagicus (Linnaeus), Podophthalmus sanguinolentus (Herbst) (estuarine), were studied. The midgut harboured highest aerobic and proteolytic bacteria. Luminescent bacterial flora were predominant in the hindgut and on the cuticular membrane of all the crabs examined. High numbers of heterotrophic bacteria were recorded in the midgut of Scylla serrata.

Title: Photoperiodic stimulation of Ovary and testis, maturation in the immature Marine Crab, Scylla serrata Forskal
Authors: Nagabhushanam, R; Farooqui, U M
Abstract: Increase in ovarian index, testis index and oocyte diameter of the crabs exposed to 14L: 10D, 16L:8D and 18L:6D photoperiods was observed. The crabs exposed to 10L:14D, 8L: 16D and 6L: 18D did not show any change over the control (12L: 12D group) crabs.

Salinity tolerance of hermit crabs

Title: Salinity tolerance of hermit crabs
Authors: Khan, S Ajmal; Natarajan, R
Abstract: Influence of salinity on the distribution of hermit crabs in Porto Novo waters was studied. Of the 5 estuarine hermit crabs studied Clibanarius olivaceus, C. longitarsus and Diogenes avarus tolerated dilutions up to 1% salinity and C. infraspinatus and C. padavensis up to 2% salinity. In marine hermit crabs (9 species) the lethal salinity range overlapped in relation to their overlapping distribution in nature.

Title: Use of slaughter house waste as a feed for Shrimps & Prawns
Authors: Sumitra-Vijayaraghavan; Royan, Joseph P; Kumari, L Krishna
Abstract: Feeding experiments with some shrimps and fishes (Metapenaeus monoceros, M. dobsoni, Sarotherodon mossambicus and Etroplus suratensis) using slaughter house waste as food, showed that the shrimps and arotherodon were able to utilize the salughter house waste more efficiently than E. suratensis.
