Aggregation of Acetes johni (Crustacea: Decapoda: Sergestidae) off Maharashtra Coast

Title: Aggregation of Acetes johni (Crustacea: Decapoda: Sergestidae) off Maharashtra Coast
Authors: Nair, Vijayalakshmi R.
Abstract: An unusual aggregation of Acetes johni is observed off Maharashtra coast (20°03'N and 70°E) during the 2nd cruise of R.V. Gaveshani. These sergestid shrimps constitute half the biomass of the sample. Acetes fishery of the Maharashtra coast in India is limited to the single species A. indicus and hence the present incidence of A. johni in large numbers during the peak fishing season seems to be significant. Coastal swarming of Acetes is seasonal and preponderance of adults in the sample may suggest the prespawning aggregation of this species.

Title: Occurrence of Scolaricia capensis Day, 1961 (Polychaeta: Orbiniidae) off the east coast of India, Bay of Bengal
Authors: Raman, A. V.; Ganapati, P. N.
Abstract: Occurrence of an orbiniid polychaete, S. capensis from an intertidal estuarine habitat in the Indian waters is reported. The species has only been once reported from the deep sea region in the Agulhas Bank from South Africa. A brief description of the worm is given along with the other estuarine and marine species of polychaetes in the same habitat.

Bioaccumulation of iron in Anadara rhombea (Born) (Bivalvia: Arcidae)

Title: Bioaccumulation of iron in Anadara rhombea (Born) (Bivalvia: Arcidae)
Authors: John, George
Abstract: Iron content of the mantle, ctenidia, adductor muscle, digestive gland and foot of A. rhombea, collected from 2 localities with different sedimentary iron concentrations was estimated. Iron content of tissues was found to be an indicator of the environmental iron concentration. During starvation iron content in all the body organs decreased, and steep decline was noted in digestive gland and ctenidia, the chief organs associated with digestion and feeding which normally show higher concentration of iron.

A model for the prediction of zooplankton abundance in an estuary

Title: A model for the prediction of zooplankton abundance in an estuary
Authors: Madhupratap, M.; Rao, T. S. S.; Iyer, H. Krishna
Abstract: Regression model for the prediction of zooplankton abundance correlating total numbers of zooplankton with salinity, temperature and oxygen from Cochin backwaters is presented. The variability explained by the parameters is 73.5% when the whole estuary is considered and 88.7% and 52.2% at 2 individual stations, viz. Aroor and Barmouth respectively. Salinity is the predominant factor controlling zooplankton abundance followed by oxygen and temperature.
