Title: Planktonic foraminifera from the sediments off Cochin
Authors: Shankaranarayanagupta, M. V.
Abstract: Sediment samples at a depth range of 27-212 m from shelf region off Cochin coast yielded about 24 species of planktonic Foraminifera. In the innershelf region the fauna was very sporadic whereas in the outer shelf it was rich; species belonging to the genera Globigerina and Globigerinoides formed the bulk of the fauna. The fauna in the outershelf region was found to be a mixture of recent and relict fauna.

Title: Musculus strigatus (Hanley) (Mollusca: Bivalvia) associated with littoral algae at Visakhapatnam
Authors: Sarma, A. L. N.; Ganapati, P. N.
Abstract: Density distribution pattern of M. strigatus among 13 physiognomically different local littoral algae is given. The morphology of the weed, its tidal level and the amount of protection offered against wave action and insolation appear to be the chief factors governing the distribution and abundance of M. strigatus. The worldwide distribution of the species and its range as recorded so far is also given.

Efficiency of different techniques for extraction of free amino acids in marine green alga, Ulva fasciata

Title: Efficiency of different techniques for extraction of free amino acids in marine green alga, Ulva fasciata
Authors: Dave, M. J.; Lewis, E. J.
Abstract: Relative efficacy of water, aqueous ethanol and cation exchange resin for extraction of free amino acids from marine green alga, U. fasciata, has been studied. Qualitatively amino acid composition remains the same in all the 3 procedures. Aqueous ethanol and resin give reproducible results, but recovery of acidic and basic compounds is comparatively less with aqueous ethanol than with resin which in turn gives very poor recovery of pyrrolidine compounds.

Title: Acetes sibogalis sp. nov. (crustacea: decapoda, sergestidae) from Cochin Backwaters with a note on its impregnation
Authors: Achuthankutty, C. T.; George, M. J.
Abstract: A new species belonging to the sergestid genus Acetes H. Milne-Edwards obtained from Cochin backwaters and named Acetes sibogalis is described in detail. A closely allied species Acetes sibogae Hansen has been recorded by Nataraj {Rec. Indian Mus., 45 (1947), 139} from Quilon waters. Although the present species has some affinities to A. sibogae, there are some clear differences especially in the genital characters, in which a combination of features of the two species, A. sibogae and A. australis, is seen. These differences, which justify the creation of a new species, are discussed in comparison with the two species as well as other known species of the genus. A detailed study of an impregnated female is also included.
