<title>Availability and functionality of omega-3 in diversified marine algae</title>

<description>Title: Availability and functionality of omega-3 in diversified marine algae
Authors: Bajpai, Vivek K.
Abstract: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as n-3 and n-6 fatty acids are essential nutrients which cannot be synthesized by mammals, or only to a limited extent. Therefore, they must be ingested via dietary sources. In general, it is vital to maintain an appropriate balance of n-3 and n-6 in the diet as these fatty acids work together to promote health. The n-3 fatty acids have been recognized to exhibit not only anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, but also exhibit anti-cancer activity, thus contributing their beneficial cardiac effects. For human consumption, current major sources of marine n-3 omega fatty acids such as eicosapentanoeic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) include include salmon, mullet and mackerel. However, at the global scale, algal-based omega-3 fatty acids for human better health have been well exploited whereas salmon based or other fish-based omega-3 consumption is avoided due religious boundaries. This review explains the updates and beneficial effects of algal based omega-3 fatty acids for human health and their better effects than other omega-3 products.

<title>A review on trend of marine sources for the development of functional foods</title>

<description>Title: A review on trend of marine sources for the development of functional foods
Authors: Bajpai, Vivek K.
Abstract: Due to phenomenal diversity, marine food is known to be a treasure house for the production of a number of healthy food ingredients such as fish protein, fish oils, macro-algae, micro-algae and biologically significant marine seaweeds. In order to increase the availability and chemical divergence of marine functional food ingredients, a plethora of research has been conducted on marine resources for the discovery of biologically active value added marine food products using advanced biotechnological tools. It has been noticed that those unique marine microbes and their biologically active metabolites are potential sources to be used as sustainable food and pharmaceutical ingredients. However, recent advances in food technology have opened up a number of novel avenues to develop natural substances as food or food ingredients. In this context, this review aims at revealing and discussing prospective applications of marine sources and their metabolites in modern nutraceuticals and functional foods.

<title>Korean seaweeds as a food of future: an update on use and risk factors</title>

<description>Title: Korean seaweeds as a food of future: an update on use and risk factors
Authors: Bajpai, Vivek K.
Abstract: Seaweeds are significant sources of biological importance with an ability to produce a wide variety of marine-based compounds having various biological properties. Recently, there is an urgent need on consistent use of marine-based seaweeds as a source of food and bioactive compounds. This review discusses the risk of hazards due to heavy metals and iodine contents, beneficial effects for human, children and pregnant women's consumption. High iodine content is also a burning problem of seaweed consumption in daily food, therefore here we discussed various view for using seaweed in our daily food. Although plethora of research in aspects of drug development has been done on seaweeds which possess molecules of potent pharmaceutical significance, there is a lot to do with aspects of developing seaweeds as functional food supplements. In this way, it is possible to promote sustainable awareness for seaweed based drug development to assert the economic development of marine industries.

<title>On the accuracy of assessing copepod size and biovolume using FlowCAM and traditional microscopy</title>
    <link>http://nopr.niscpr.res.in/handle/123456789/42255</link>
<description>Title: On the accuracy of assessing copepod size and biovolume using FlowCAM and traditional microscopy
Authors: Karnan, C.; Jyothibabu, R.; Kumar, T. M. Manoj; Jagadeesan, L.; Arunpandi, N.
Abstract: In this paper, based on the biovolume estimation of different genera of copepods, we present the fact that only the Area-based Diameter (ABD) algorithm of FlowCAM has the efficiency to measure the bio-volume of copepods better than traditional microscopy. Also, we have demonstrated that the efficiency of the Equivalent Spherical Diameter (ESD) algorithm of FlowCAM over traditional microscopy is lesser while assessing the copepod biomass, and it depends on the morphological characteristics of various copepod genera. The ESD algorithm overestimates (8-140 times) while traditional microscopy method underestimates (2-8 times) the copepod biovolume, chiefly because of the inclusion of the entire image field for volume estimation in the former case and avoidance of extended body parts such as appendages in the latter case. These observations have special implications in aquatic environmental monitoring as many of the modern researchers prefer FlowCAM as a better tool to accurately quantify plankton biomass.
