Seam elongation behavior of knitted fabrics due to donning-doffing.

Title: Seam elongation behavior of knitted fabrics due to donning-doffing.
Authors: Choudhary, A K; Chauhan, Roopam
Abstract: Seam elongation behavior of knitted fabrics has been studied along with the effect of various parameters like stitch type, sewing thread, fabric direction and fabric layers on the strain encountered by seams in knitted garments. Seam strain is assessed both in longitudinal and transverse directions under tensile loading. The experimental results show that these parameters affect seam elongation differently when stressed in longitudinal and transverse directions. Occurrence of seam cracking is observed in lockstitch when elongated in longitudinal direction. A phenomenon known as seam grinning is observed in all transverse direction loads. This paper also reports the effect of above parameters on the grinning behavior of seams at different elongation percentage (30% and 40%) of seams. It is found that over-lock stitch gives the maximum amount of seam grin. Fabric stitched in wales direction and fabric layers formed by joining two plain knitted fabrics give higher amount of seam grinning.

Abstract: A new finishing technique using quaternary ammonium groups (QAG) via polymerization of methacryloyloxyethyl ammonium chloride (PMAETAC), in presence of TiO2 /ZnO / TiO2+ZnO nanoparticles in wool, wool/polyester fabrics has been studied, using K2S2O8 as initiator for the graft copolymerization reaction. The antimicrobial activities of the finished fabrics have been assessed against <i>Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa </i>as well as Candida albicans. The findings show that, the finished fabrics with PMAETAC and their hydride combination with metal oxide NPs have outstanding activity against E. coli & S. aureus as well as excellent UV protection as compared to that finished with PMAETAC alone. The finished fabrics are also characterized by Fourier transformation infrared. The topography of the fabrics surface is examined by SEM and EDX. After five washing cycles, the acquired properties are found slightly affected, indicating an excellent wash durability.

Effect of yarn twist on tensile strength, abrasion and pilling resistance of plain-woven cotton fabric

Title: Effect of yarn twist on tensile strength, abrasion and pilling resistance of plain-woven cotton fabric
Authors: Ayele, Million; Merga, Yohannes; Yilma, Amarech; Yilie, Derseh
Abstract: The effect of twist on tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and pilling resistance of plain-woven fabric has been studied.
The plain-woven fabric has been produced from open-end spun cotton yarn. The weft yarn has been produced at 4 different
twist levels (900, 905, 910, and 915 TPM) and the effect of twist levels is also studied. To examine the effect of twist, four
different samples of plain-woven fabric are produced from these yarns. From the ANOVA results, it is found that with an
increment in twist level of the yarn, there is a significant increment in tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and pilling
resistance of the fabric.

Properties of air-vortex blended yarn influenced by spinning process parameters

Title: Properties of air-vortex blended yarn influenced by spinning process parameters
Authors: Tripathi, Lekhani; Jain, Manya; Ishtiaque, S M
Abstract: Box-Behnken three variables three factors design has been used to optimize the machine spindle diameter, nozzle pressure and yarn delivery speed for achieving the required quality of air vortex polyester/cotton blended yarn. The response surface equations for respective yarn properties in terms of coded factors and significant model terms are developed. Yarn tenacity and elongation show an increase with the increase in nozzle pressure and a decrease with an increase in delivery speed and spindle diameter. Yarn thin places, thick places, neps, U% and hairiness index depict an increase with the increase in delivery speed and spindle diameter, while the decrease is observed with an increase in nozzle pressure. A combination of 1.1mm spindle diameter, 0.5 MPa nozzle pressure and 432.38 m/min delivery speed is the optimized value for targeted yarn quality at 0.71 desirability value.
