    <title>Estimation of extreme wave heights and wind speeds in the South China Sea</title>
    <link>http://nopr.niscpr.res.in/handle/123456789/58648</link>
    <description>Title: Estimation of extreme wave heights and wind speeds in the South China Sea
Authors: Wang, J C; Zang, S D; Ji, Y J; Zhang, Y H
Abstract: Extreme events have significant impacts on the coastal and offshore regions. In the present paper, the return values of&#xD;
significant wave height and wind speed are estimated based on three different models namely generalized extreme value&#xD;
distribution, generalized Pareto distribution and polynomial approximation to acquire a universal and trustworthy model&#xD;
estimate. Here, six sites in the South China Sea with diverse geographical characteristics are considered to perform the&#xD;
extreme value analysis and the datasets used in the experiments were derived from the ERA-Interim reanalysis. Then the&#xD;
advantages and shortcomings of three different methods are discussed and analyzed in detail. The polynomial approximation&#xD;
method is analyzed and compared with the other methods, and it is found that this new method predominantly resolves the&#xD;
drawbacks encountered by the other typical extreme value estimation methods and it is suitable for estimating the return&#xD;
values in the South China Sea.

    <title>Population composition of calanoid copepods of the Chennai coast, Tamil Nadu</title>

    <description>Title: Population composition of calanoid copepods of the Chennai coast, Tamil Nadu
Authors: Sivakumar, K; Nawaz, Md A; Saboor, A
Abstract: The study aims to determine the population composition of calanoid copepods from Ennore, Marina and Kovalam stations of&#xD;
the Chennai coast during the period of October 2018 to September 2019. Zooplankton samples were collected from 3 stations&#xD;
monthly. Temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and salinity of water samples were measured. In the present study, 24 calanoid&#xD;
copepod species were recorded from 3 stations. Index of dominance of calanoid copepod was high in the month of October 2018 at&#xD;
Ennore and Kovalam stations and in the month of November 2018 was high at Marina, however, index of diversity and evenness of&#xD;
calanoid copepod was high in the month of March 2019 at all the stations. Labidocera aestiva showed high average density&#xD;
(68.99±11.11 nos/m3), followed by Subeucalanus crassus (34.40±6.75 nos/m3). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of calanoid&#xD;
copepods between the species showed postive as well as negative correlations at the three sampling stations. The calanoid copepods&#xD;
were high (1253.80±11.66 nos/m3, 1221.20±13.49 nos/m3 and 938.90±9.45 nos/m3) in the month of March 2019 at Marina,&#xD;
Kovalam and Ennore stations, respectively. Calanoid copepods densities were statistically analyzed whereas, PCA highlighted&#xD;
about relationship among the species.

    <title>Morpho-molecular assessment of Acetabularia jalakanyakae Sp. Nov. (Dasycladales, Chlorophyta) - a new species from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India</title>

    <description>Title: Morpho-molecular assessment of Acetabularia jalakanyakae Sp. Nov. (Dasycladales, Chlorophyta) - a new species from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India
Authors: Saini, K C; Madhu, A; Kohli, R K; Gupta, K; Bast, F
Abstract: Acetabularia (Dasycladales) is an extant genus of a single-celled green alga. There are four species of this genus reported&#xD;
from India, three reported from Andaman and Nicobar Islands. For this study, Acetabularia isolate was collected from a&#xD;
rocky intertidal habitat in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Light microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy were&#xD;
used for the morphological characterization. The distinct traits of caps of the thalli were prioritized because, traditionally,&#xD;
species delimitations in Acetabularia mainly were based on cap morphology. Our isolate showed morphological similarity&#xD;
with Acetabularia crenulata. However, the number of hairs in the inner ring of lobes of caps and the stalk length were&#xD;
observed to be different from A. crenulata and other closely related species. The phylogenetic tree constructed for partial&#xD;
18S rDNA using the Maximum Likelihood (ML) method revealed the evolutionary affinity of this new species with&#xD;
Acetabularia dentata. Based on morphological and molecular synapomorphy, a new species of Acetabularia, Acetabularia&#xD;
jalakanyakae is formally proposed herein, and the further implications of this species discovery are discussed.

    <description>Title: First record of marine gastropod Prionovolva brevis (G. B. Sowerby I, 1828) from Gujarat coast, India
Authors: Vadher, P; Kardani, H; Beleem, I
Abstract: The present study describes a single species of marine gastropod commonly called fruit egg shell cowrie, Prionovolva&#xD;
brevis (G. B. Sowerby I, 1828) reported for the first time from Gujarat, India. This species was found in association with&#xD;
soft coral (Dendronephthya sp.) in lower intertidal zone of Sikka coast. A morphological description with key characters,&#xD;
illustrations and geographical distribution of present species are given.
