Microbial phosphate solubilisation as influenced by sodium chloride

Title: Microbial phosphate solubilisation as influenced by sodium chloride
Authors: Gaind, Sunita; Gaur, A C
Abstract: A thermotolerant
phosphate solubilizing bacteria was tolerant to salt stress and could solubilise
P2O5, (56 %) at sodium chloride concentration of 3.5 %, whereas,
Bacillus polymyxa and a Bacillus sp. were sensitive. Turbidity
and pH showed no correlation with phosphate solubilization by these
bacteria.

Biological activity of indigenous plant extracts as mosquito larvicides

Title: Biological activity of indigenous plant extracts as mosquito larvicides
Authors: Latha, C; Vijayakumar, P D; Velayudhan, Saleena; Joseph, Ammini
Abstract: Petroleum ether
extracts of 41 indigenous plants abundant in different parts of Kerala were studied
for the larvicidal activity against the urban mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus
and the saline water mosquito, Culex sitiens. The extracts of 18 plants
showed larvicidal activity against the early fourth in star larvae of Cx.
sitiens. Two plant species Piper longum and Zingiber wightianum
were effective against the early fourth instar larvae of Cx. quinquefasciatus
and ex. sitiens. Therefore, the plant species P. longum and Z.
wightianum were identified as potential biopesticides.

Immunization of cattle against Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum using larval antigens

Title: Immunization of cattle against Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum using larval antigens
Authors: Ghosh, S; Khan, M H
Abstract: Development
of immunity in cross-bred (Bos taurus x Bos indicus) calves
against Hyalomma analolicum analolicum, vector of bovine tropical theileriosis,
was studied using larval antigen (LS) in Freund's complete adjuvant (FLA). Calves immunized
with LS + FCA showed significant rejection
of larvae (57.25±6.8) and nymphs (45.75 ± 5.16). Abnormally fed
larvae (11.4 ± 0.8) and nymphs (8.25 ± 1.2) were also recovered from immunized
calves. This abnormal feeding may possibly be attributed to their inability
to gain access to the blood vessels owing to the host immunological reactions.
Consequently,

feeding of
extravascular fluid leads to white colour of fed ticks. Sera from all immunized
calves after a week of immunization were positive for anti-LS antibodies in ELISA.
The investigation indicates that LS in FCA enhanced anti-tick immunity.

Effects of vanadate, insulin and fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum) on creatine kinase levels in tissues of diabetic rat

Title: Effects of vanadate, insulin and fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum) on creatine kinase levels in tissues of diabetic rat
Authors: Genet, Solomon; Kale, Raosaheb K.; Baquer, Najma Z.
Abstract: The in
vivo effects of insulin, and other insulino mimetic agents like vanadate
and fenugreek (T. foenum graecum) were followed on the changes in the activit
ies of creatine kinase in heart, skeletal muscle and liver of experimental diabetic
rats. As compared to control rats, creatine kinase activities were found to decrease
significantly in the tissues during experimental diabetes. All the antidi abetic
compounds used namely, insulin, vanadate and Fenugreek seed powder normalised
the decreased activities to almost control values. The effects of insulin and vanadate
were comparable in restoring normoglycemia and the creatine kinase activities.
