Title: Western Ghats of India: Rich source of microbial biodiversity
Authors: Nampoothiri, K Madhavan; Ramkumar, B; Pandey, Ashok
Abstract: Western Ghats is one of the unique biodiversity niches,
with varied flora, fauna and landscapes. This review presents some data on
microbial diversity of Western Ghats, emphasizing the prospects of exploiting
them for potential applications that could be imperative for socio-economic
development of India.

Modelling of solid waste gasification process for synthesis gas production

Title: Modelling of solid waste gasification process for synthesis gas production
Authors: Bhavanam, Anjireddy; Sastry, R C
Abstract: This
study presents a mathematical model to predict synthesis gas (CO+H2)
composition from selected solid wastes (municipal waste, animal waste and
agricultural waste) in a downdraft fixed bed reactor. This model assumes chemical
and thermodynamic equilibrium with products inside the reactor. Effect of
temperature in gasification zone, equivalence ratio and moisture content of
biomass on gas composition was investigated. Model helps to know the behaviour
of different biomass types and is a useful tool for predicting operating
parameters of downdraft gasifiers with this biomass.

Title: Extracellular proline aminopeptidase production by <i>Streptomyces lavendulae </i>ATCC14162 under solid-state fermentation
Authors: Nandan, Arya; Nampoothiri, Kesavan Madhavan
Abstract: This
study presents extracellular Proline aminopeptidase (PAP) production by <i>Streptomyces
lavendulae </i>ATCC 14162 under solid state fermentation (SSF). After
optimization of few significant parameters (particle size of selected
substrate, inoculums size, initial moisture level and incubation time), maximum
PAP production was found to be 83.07 IU/gds. This is the first report on extracellular
PAP production using SSF by a <i>Streptomyces </i>culture.

Development of a microbial consortium for production of blend of enzymes for hydrolysis of agricultural wastes into sugars

Title: Development of a microbial consortium for production of blend of enzymes for hydrolysis of agricultural wastes into sugars
Authors: Vats, Siddharth; Maurya, Devendra Prasad; Shaimoon, Mohmed; Agarwal, Ayushi; Negi, Sangeeta
Abstract: This
study presents development of a blend of enzymes capable of degrading
lignocellulosic biomass from a locally isolated microbial consortium through
solid state fermentation. Different agro wastes (wheat bran, rice husk and pine
needles) were taken in all combinations as a substrate and at 1:1:1 ratio,
optimum production of blend of enzymes was obtained with 0.673 U/ml, 0.214 U/ml
and 0.032 U/ml activities respectively after 3 days of incubation at 37°C. This
blend of enzyme hydrolysed pine waste and released 0.454 g/g of sugar at 37°C
at 120 rpm for 48 h. Produced blend of enzymes was found very potent and can
have great application in biofuel, phytochemical and other industries.
