Estimation of Sodium Content of Some Commercial Antacid Tablets by Flame Photometry

Title: Estimation of Sodium Content of Some Commercial Antacid Tablets by Flame Photometry
Authors: Manna, A; Samanta, A; Pal, D K; Si, A; Bandopadhyay, S; Suresh, P
Abstract: Antacids are marketed widely as over-the-counter
(OTC) drugs, which are generally used for

neutralising the acid, for relief of heart
burn, dyspepsia and large variety of non-specific

gastrointestinal symptoms. A study on composition
of antacid formulations reveals that a large number of antacid formulations
contain aluminium hydroxide and/or magnesium hydroxide which, in turn , contains
some units of sodium ions in it. The presence of sodium ions in antacid preparations
is particularly contraindicated in patients with known cardiac and hypertensive
problems. In the present study, an attempt is therefore made to study the content
of sodium ions in marketed antacid tablets. Estimation of sodium content was
made by Flame photometry. The study reveals that the formulation contains significant
concentration of sodium ions, which suggests that care must be taken during the
manufacturing of these hydroxides and certain specifications are needed by the
monographs regarding the sodium content of antacid preparations.

A Case Study of Chandrapura Thermal Power Station – Leaching Study of Trace Elements from Fly Ashes

Title: A Case Study of Chandrapura Thermal Power Station – Leaching Study of Trace Elements from Fly Ashes
Authors: Kumar, Sanjay
Abstract: Electricity generation has been increasing
at a rapid pace due to Industrialization and changing life styles. Coal is the major
source of energy, since India
has vast reserves of thermal power grade coal. Nearly every naturally occurring
element is likely to be present in coal and these get entrained in the resultant
bottom ash. Indian coals contain high ash coupled with low calorific value, and
consequently resulting huge amount of fly ash. This ash accumulates in onsite piles
and ponds, thereby resulting in serious environment problems, particularly trace
elements contamination of ground and surface waters. This study envisages the environmental
assessment of fly ash from Chandrapura Thermal Power Station. Leaching study of
fly ash is made by the analysis of leaches from open percolation leaching column
experiments over a period of 274 d. Trace elements were observed within the regulatory
limits. Many of the trace elements evaluated viz. Cr, Ni, Co, Se, Al, As, B, Ba,
Sb and Hg were observed at below detection limits. Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Pb, Cd
and other dissolved ions leached at significant concentration levels, while Cu
and Zn leached normally at lower concentration levels. The study suggests low-cost
high volume utilization of fly ash as fill material for reclaiming surrounding
abandoned mined out areas which are environmentally acceptable.

Cholesterol Binding in Schistocerca gregaria and Insect Cell Lines

Title: Cholesterol Binding in Schistocerca gregaria and Insect Cell Lines
Authors: Upadhyay, Ravi Kant; Dhar, Ravi; Agarwal, H C
Abstract: Cholesterol binding affinities in different
tissue homogenates of Schistocerca gregaria (Forskal) and insect cell line
are reported. In the first set of experiment , binding could be observed in haemolymph,
ovary, testis, fat body, midgut, mucin and serum protiens of both sexes of Schistocerca
gregoria. The binding assays were conducted in the presence of labelled and
unlabelled cholesterol. The total number of binding sites (Rt ) are found to be
4.77×10-8 mole/L while extracted proteins from 1st and IInd peaks
show 7.10×10-9 and 12.8× 10-9 mole/L. The binding sites in
delipidated mucin have shown some higher binding (2.97 × 10-8
mole/L) than the non-lipidated mucin (1.38 ×10-8 mole/L). Insect
cell lines Sf-9 and BmN cells have kd value of 1.494×10-8 and 4.08×10-8
mole/L in crude homogenate.

Deinking of Wastepapers with White-rot Fungus, Phanerochaet chrysosporium NRRL 6361

Title: Deinking of Wastepapers with White-rot Fungus, Phanerochaet chrysosporium NRRL 6361
Authors: Mansour, Olfat Y; Helmy, Samia M; El-Meligi, Magda
Abstract: The study examines the ability of
white-rot fungus Phanerochaet chrysosporium NRRL 6361 to deink the
wastepapers under investigation; namely, newsprint, writing, and printing
papers. The wastepapers are inoculated with culture of P. chrysosporium
NRRL 6361 under sterilized conditions at different pHs (5-11.4) in the
presence and absence of growth media. The optimization of the process parameters
shows that the incubation for one week at 32 ± 2°C results in maximum deinking
of recycled newsprint at pH 11.4 with brigtness 39 per cent and maximum brightness
of recycled printing papers 75 per cent at pH 7.2, while for writing paper the
maximum brightness obtained is 80 per cent at pH 7.5. The α-cellulose content

of recycled wastepapers is found to increases,
while lignin decreases during deinking by P. chrysosporium NRRL 6361. The
results indicate that the fungus do not have any affect on the cellulose. Scanning
electron microscope (SEM) is used to follow the fungus growth hyphae through
the wastepapers after one week of incubation. The mechanical properties of the handsheets
made from recycled wastepapers slightly decrease. Therefore, starch-silicate
complex is used to overcome the decrease of the mechanical properties.
